outlet converter for cpap?

Post by deepurpleprincess » Mon Jan 12, 2009 4:50 pm

We are moving to florida from Montana and brother doesn't want to stop very often so he said to buy a outlet converter or something like that. That way I could sleep in the car. He said it will plug into the lighter thing in the car and then the cpap can plug into it. Is this possible? I don't know much about these things. Just wondering if this would work?

Do I have to get it through them? Can I go to ace hardware or something like that to buy one?

I use one in my boat. I wouldn't sleep overnight with the engine off or you could be walking.

You will need a power source, as well as this plug. You can use this while the vehicle is in operation - if you are sleeping while brother is driving - but you cannot use this when vehicle is stopped.

Search for "battery backup" to find power sources.

I would NOT use any other cord than this one provided by Respironics.

Cheers,
Babs

We bought one for my unit.....was told by the technicians that if we use anything BUT their recommendation (meaning: what they sell) then our warranty will not be good. So we bit the bullet and bought mine (cost $60.00!!). And yes, if the car is stopped you'll need a battery to hook it up to.

What do you think of this:

Do you think it will work? The reason I want to go to ace is because I don't have time to wait for something in the mail. Thanks for the help.

I am not sure of your power requirements, but an output of 100Watts may be too low. I have an inverter unit that looks to be similar, but I use it to connect to laptops, portable DVD players, etc. Where it basically charges the battery and doesn't power a motor or something else with a big power draw.

Just an FYI, albeit one that may throw a monkey wrench in your plans...the Respironics DC power cord instructions specifically state not to use it while the vehicle engine is running. It doesn't explain why in the documentation, but I assume it's because the system can be well above 12v while the engine is running which may damage your CPAP. I don't use my APAP in the car or motorhome while we're moving, I just nap without it.

I don't know what to suggest for overnight sleeping except a battery pack like Babette suggests you do a search for. Good luck!
