What to do when going to the bathroom?

Post by stepbill » Wed Jan 07, 2009 5:37 pm

Not that I have a problem mind you. When your sleeping at night and have to get up to go to the reading room, do you turn your machine off or do you just take the mask off and let it run? If you take it off, will this show as a leak? I don't have the memory card yet and just check my results on the LED screen. Thanks for the input.

I turn mine off before taking off the mask, so as to not wake my wife with the sound of the air rushing. I am so pleased she isn't having to wear earplugs at night now that I am not snoring and gasping.
I know some machines can tell you aren't breathing with the machine when the mask is off, so I don't know about the reported leaks.

Nah. You've got a Resmed. Turn the Resmed off, whether you take your mask off or just breathe thru your mouth until you get back to bed is your choice. Put your hose/mask back on, climb in bed and turn your Resmed back on if it doesn't start on its own. Been doing this since I started CPAP back Oct 2006 w/nary a problem. Doesn't mess up the data at all.

My data would show a leak. I usually just turn the thing off for a second.
Not your stereotypical xpap user! 5 feet tall, healthy weight, female, and 23. I've had OSA undiagnosed at least since high school.

In addition to OSA, I also order up random food I don't like while I'm asleep.

I have a quick connect on my hose. I unplug the hose from my mask, stick the end of the hose under my pillow so I will be able to find it, and paddle off. I leave my mask on and let the auto-shut off turn off my machine. When I get back, I plug the hose back into my mask, and go back to bed -- autostart turns the machine back on.

At first I would fumble around and turn the machine off before ripping the mask off....including that one time where I woke because I had knocked my mask most of the way off.

But, I have recently turned on the auto-off feature....so last night I just let that feature turn off the CPAP when I got up to go. And, the last couple of nights, I've also used it when waking up in the morning.

I have seen the really big spike of 'leak' from letting the auto-off do its thing, and its clear to me that's why it happened....will see if RT or Doctor say anything about it.

I usually suspend the machine & detach mask hose as I have a qik disconnect fitting (but leave mask on)
- trip over the carpet
- scare the hell out of the cat
- stumble through the house
- return & reattach
- reactivate the blaster

An alternate solution:

Once you've been on CPAP a while, you may not have to worry about this anymore. It's been a looooooong time since I've had to get up in the middle of the night to pee - and I used to have to at least once (sometimes twice) a night.

When I do have to get up though (too much sweet tea ) I turn it off. Mostly because I used to be anal about my leak data, and it's just habit now to turn it off. That, the sound of the rushing air scares anyone nearby.
Machine: M-Series Auto
Mask: Headrest
No humidifier
On the hose since 2005.

I use a 10 ft hose and the cpap is by the foot of the bed. I can get to the pit stop without turning machine off or taking off the mask. When I got to go, I just stay all hooked up.

Now if the pit stop was a few feet further, I would have to figure out what to do but for now, I got it made.

I hit the middle button on the Respironics unit then unplug the mask then go to bathroom with mask on.
Just don't make the mistake I did once and forget to unhook from the mask when marching to the bathroom.

I have ALWAYS shut off my machine (one little button) BEFORE I take off my mask (one little clip) to go to the bathroom. Then when I get back, it's only that one little clip to put the mask back on and the machine will restart with my breathing.
Good grief! It's not that much effort to push one little button to shut it off........and, I'm anal about my leak data, too.

I always turn off the machine, disconnect the hose and leave mask on. Upon return, I connect the hose to mask and wait for the machine to start pumping air automatically.

I like the quick disconnect on my Liberty. Short, sweet and puts the hole right over my mouth so I'm not trying to breath through the elbow and its anti-asphyxia valve.

However, I found I don't really need to get up very often anymore. If I do, its after I've been asleep for 4 hours or more. Any kind of sustained waking period after about 4 hours and I can't fall back asleep with the mask on. I have to either stay up or finish out the sleep CPAP-less.
