Missing my (canine) Brown Eyed Girl

Post by yorkiemum01 » Mon Dec 22, 2008 7:52 pm

My nearly 15 yr old Chocolate lab...Hershey...sadly has passed on
and our family is lost without her. She's been a loyal, loving companion
for my son's for her entire life, and we've been blessed to have her,
and ache in her passing. To have love and lost a dog is far better than to have never loved a canine companion, and her gentle nature has been a life lesson for my boys in their youth.
Tonight, I've lost my 'brown eyed girl with the velvet ears' ...and forever she remains in our hearts.

I'm truly sorry to hear that. We have 6 dogs, 2 birds and a cat. One of the dogs is a black lab and just loves everyone. 15 years is a long time. I'm sorry for your what your going through, you've lost a friend, not a dog.

Always a sad thing, that's very hard to overcome, it's been years since I had to put my last one down. It still hangs heavy on my heart, so much that I'll never have another. It's funny how a animal can be your best friend in your worst of times. They ask so little and give so much just fair care and a smile or kind word and they brighten up the room, just when you need it the most. At Christmas it will be even harder to forget the pain, so many memories.

I hope for us that are left behind, someday we can forget our pain of loss, and just remember the good parts of the kindness they shared with us. Jim

Jim, I've been sitting here for ten minutes, trying to gather the words to describe my empathy for this event. You have brought tears to my eyes with your sensitive and articulate sentiments. Thanks for putting into words what is so hard to put into words. Our little critters are such a constant and endearing and unconditionally loving presence in our lives, that their loss can sometimes be more intense than almost any other.

Yorkiemum, my heart is with you. So sorry, and I do know how hard this is.

Fifteen years is a wonderful time for Lab... but it doesn't matter how long they are with us, it is never long enough. You might find http://www.petloss.com/ a good place to browse.

I don't know if you had to make "that decision" for Hershey, but if you did, I ran across this some time ago:

I have sent you on a journey to a land free from pain. Not because I did not love you, but because I loved you too much to force you to stay.

As a furchild parent, you almost certainly know about The Rainbow Bridge:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

<hugs>

So sorry to hear your heart is aching with this loss. What a blessing for your family to have had 15 years with Hershey. And what a blessing for Hershey to have been loved and safe for her lifetime. May your every tear be matched by a loving memory that makes you smile.

Kathy

P.S. We lost our beloved white boxer several months ago, and the tears are still so near the surface. My avatar is our newest addition, Miss Tulee Belle. We got one totally different from our Kano because his pawprints were too big to fill. But her little paws have already left quite an imprint on our hearts.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Pets are so much a part of the family. Here are a few of my favorite quotes.

He is your Friend, your Partner, your Defender, your Dog.
You are his Life, his Love, his Leader.
He will be yours, Faithful and True,
to the last beat of his heart.
You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

A dog has one
aim in life –
to bestow his heart.

Dogs have given us their absolute all.
We are the center of their universe.
We are the focus of their love & faith & trust.
They serve us in return for scraps.
It is without a doubt, the best deal man has ever made.
-Roger Caras

Blessed is the man who has earned the love of an old dog.
-Sydney Jeane Seward

A dog desires affection more than his dinner.
Well, almost.

I'll remember your family in my prayers tonight.

Sorry for your loss. Dogs are so much more advanced than people. I miss my Australian Shepard, Sam. Best dog in the world and he can't be replaced.

Our Red Heeler, Rocky is starting to get old and it's sad watching him age. Heeler's are the liveliest dogs I've ever seen and he is running at about a third of his youth.

They tear your heart out, but you can't help but love them.

I am so sorry for your loss. Pets are special friends sent by God to give us unconditional love and support.

When I was dx with breast cancer, my little pound puppy mutt Chessie was such a comfort to me. I lost my brother several months prior, and when I would sit and quietly cry in my room she would jump in my lap and sit with me. We found out a few months later that she too, had a tumor in her chest -- we opted for extensive surgery and we had her another five wonderful years until we had to put her down.

My daughter was a vet student at the time, so we were fortunate enough to be able to put her down at home, where she was comfortable and we were there for her. It was a very peaceful thing, and we all know it was best for her.

We love our animals so much, and having to lose one is something almost unbearable.

I adopted another pound puppy in Chessie's honor, and she is such a joy to come home to -- she loves her mom just like Chessie did.

Take Care

Velvet ears, velvet noses...nothing better than a lab.

15yrs. 5 bonus years.

Blake-the super dog.
Keeley-Blake's daughter
Storm-quiet and innocent
Kiva-velvet nose and a lover
Pepper-was my friend through the darkest, most
enlightening years of my life and when the hard
work was done, she was taken way too soon w/cancer.

Each one is a blessing in our lives.
Each one so special in their own way.

I know that your brown eyed girl had a wonderful life.
Hershey and all those listed above, live on in our hearts.
"If your therapy is improving your health but you're not doing anything
to see or feel those changes, you'll never know what you're capable of."
I said that.
