first night

Post by crowhaven » Thu Dec 11, 2008 8:49 am

Hello, thanks for this great resource. Last night was my first night, I was diappointed that I didn't wake up as refreshed this morning as I expected. I still woke up four times but got back to sleep each time. The mask leaked at times but nothing that couldn't be adjusted. Overall the experience wasn't bad, but when will I wake up with a spring in my step?

after almost 3 weeks i'm still awaiting a spring in my step - however i will say after the first night or two i felt i was much SHARPER and able to do detailed work much better than i had in a long time. the first night i just plain passed out and ended up taking 2 hour naps at a clip (hey, ya gotta adjust to this thing) second night was similar - last night i made it about 4 hours before i awoke to rainout in my eye - fooled around with the tubing, shook water out, read for 30 minutes, and slept for most of the rest of the night. i'm not energetic per se, but i'm far less groggy - kinda like getting rid of a sore throat - you don't necessarily feel great, you just feel a lot better than feeling worse.
my big .02 is to make sure the straps aren't too tight - i beat the crap out of my nostrils by pulling the straps until my nostrils wrapped around my head - they were sore for days and my leaks were high - now the straps are loose - i have to adjust them when i change position, but the leak rate is almost nil - and far less than when the straps were tight.
stick to it - it will get better!

Welcome to the forum!

We all seem to react in our own time - some get relief right away, for others it can take months.

However, there are some things that can increase the time it takes. For example, if you're a mouth-breather, you may want to look at some options for improving that; some say that if you mouth-breathe, you're "losing your therapy through your mouth".

Initially you might not sleep as well - I remember waking up multiple times when my mask leaked. Once I started mostly sleeping through the night, I felt better.

And finally, it helps to have either a data capable machine or one that displays a single night's numbers on the LCD screen so you can tell if you're getting adequate therapy.

Good luck!
Mindy

Thanks for the replies. I think the real problem is a sinus cold, last night I had to turn the machine off because of cold issues. Boy, I missed it right away. I think I may invest in a chin strap also, I am a mouth breather and I'm so tired of cotton mouth in the morning.

For me, when I have a cold I use the NeilMed Sinus rinse to clear things out before I go to bed. It helps for me. Some people use a neti pot for the same thing.

If you can tolerate a full-face mask, that seems to be one solution to mouth breathing. There are probably thousands of posts on this forum on mouth breathing and possible solutions. You can use the search feature and also click on the yellow light bulb for "Our Collective Wisdom".

If you're waking up with cotton mouth, you are mouth breathing and leaking more than you should.

A PapCap did the trick for me. http://www.pur-sleep.com/products/produ ... category=6

Keep at it.
