Had my gastric bypass surgery

Post by bpoe689 » Tue Jul 12, 2005 9:08 pm

Helllo all,

Had my gastric bypass surgery on June 28. A problem with my spleen caused me to have the big surgery, so I am just now able to get on puter to let ya'll know I am still among the living. Although I was in intensive care for several days, a regular room from several more, I am now home and on my way to recovery. Had staples removed yesterday, always makes you feel better. Already lost 15 lbs. Soft solid foods - 2 tbls. every 2 hours or so. 64 oz. liquid a day. Not hungry at all. My cpap was with me at the hospital, although they had me on straight oxygen most of the time. After 3 or 4 nights, I started to use cpap, but only at night, when not on cpap on light oxygen.

Now the bad part. My mother got so upset that things went kind of wrong with my surgery, she went into full blown dimentia and had to be put in the hospital. She has been there since the 4th. Since I am her caregiver, she couldn't comprehend that I was going to be alright, so she started falling - fell 7 times in 2 days. My son finally called ambulance to come and get her. I went to see her by wheelchair before I left hospital and it just about broke me down. I did get to see her yesterday and she finally believes that I am going to live. She still does not make much sense, but she has improved. My doctor has informed me that under no circumstances can I care for her until I am completely well. (My incisioin is really large!) He said that I could not help her because it would only put me in hospital again. Her doctors are working with me. They are trying different drugs to calm her and will place her in nursing home for 3 weeks for physical therphy, etc.

I need all the prayers I can get from all you good people. I blame myself for what has happended to her, but this surgery is the only thing that will save my life. My liver was so enlarged from diabetes. They belive that it will heal. My sleep apnea will improve, bp go down, etc. etc..

Good luck to all of ya'll.

Becky

I just had my first night of sleep study. My questions is, when I have the gastric bypass surgery and lose weight, will I still have to wear this equipment? I have not received all results, but oxygen level did go down to 76. That they did not like.

I was really out of breath so the O2 helped me lots. The cpap set at 15 was a little hard to tolerate with stomach cut open. I felt better with O2.

I just had my first night of sleep study. My questions is, when I have the gastric bypass surgery and lose weight, will I still have to wear this equipment? I have not received all results, but oxygen level did go down to 76. That they did not like.

Becky,

So happy that you are one your way to recovery and will pray for you and your Mom.

Please don't blame yourself for what happened to your Mother. The dementia would probably have begun anyway. Also praying for her.

Becky, Glad the op is over and you are on the way to a complete recovery.
Sorry about your Mom, but never believe you were the cause. remember that old saying " before you can do a good job caring for someone else, you first must take care of yourself". God Bless your Mom and I hope she improves and you can again enjoy visiting her without feeling guilty. Guilt is just a downer , and to help yourself and your mom, you must look forward and realize that you have done your best caring for her over the years. Take time to heal well before taking on more responsibilty. Can`t help your Mom if you get sick or back in the Hospital. Don`t be so hard on yourself. I know you are letting your Mom know how much you love her and that you will be there for her in the future. Thats the most anyone can do. Good luck. Take care,
Dot

I second what everyone else says, and our thoughts are indeed with you both

I also know that without a doubt you will feel better and more able to care for others when you recover from your own surgery. A very good friend of mine recently lost 150lbs with gastric by-pass (and the recovery process) and has never felt better in her life, is able to walk 2-5 miles a day for exersize, etc. Jus tremember you still have to pay attention to your "rules" every once in a while she over eats or eats something too sugary, and is reminded by her body not to do that again.

So, I hope that you too benefit in both your personal health and your ability to care for your mother from this.
Again, my thought sare with you.

Thanks to all for your support. Mom was transferred to a nursing home today for 21 days. I will try to see her tomorrow. I do realize this is the best place for her right now. Just hope she sees it that way. She has always been a very forceful person and would - well nevr mind, you probably know how some elderly people can be. My brothers are standing behind me on all decisions (course, they don't want her ). I do thank all of you for your support and prayers.

Since surgery, 15 pressure has been a little too stronge, but I ramp a couple of times, by then I have relaxed enough to handle it. Talked with RT today, she will inform my dr. to see if he wants to lower it. Still not sleeping much, but she checked hours and was pleased with amount. Feels better to sleep sitting up some. Abdominal surgery is the pits

Good luck to all, maybe I will loose enough weight to be able to ditch this cpap machine but dr. did not think so. Cross my fingers.

Becky,
You and your mother are both in my prayers. I have so much faith in prayers and I also believe in the power of numbers even though the Bible tells us: "Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven." Matthew 18:19
I am praying for God to comfort you as you recuperate from your surgery and envelop your mother with a peace of mind such as only He can.
"For those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31
Take good care of yourself and keep us updated as we care.
May God bless you.
