Converter Cord & ResMed S8 with Humidifier

Post by StevenJ » Wed Nov 26, 2008 7:37 pm

I've read enough here to know the ResMed DC-12V converter cord can be used to power the flow generator but not the H3i humidifier. According to In House Comments on cpap.com:

"This is the only product that you should use to power the S8 machines from a DC source, unless you also use a heated humidifer. Then you will need a Pure Sine Wave DC Inverter. Other cables may fit but will blow out the S8 power supply (no kidding, we have found out the hard way). The polarity is different from most 12 volt cables and the converter provides needed power smoothing."

It's not clear whether "other cables" blew out the S8 power supply or if that was caused by running the humidifier.

Here's the question: is it safe to leave the humidifer attached and run it in passover mode (off), or should it be detached from the flow generator when using the converter cord?

The humidifier only works if AC is connected to the S8 flow generator. When DC is connected to the S8, the humdifier is not powered at all.

The DC power socket polarity on an S8 is different to some 12V DC powerable CPAP units, but its the same as numerous other DC powered devices

The bottom line is that there is no general polarity standard (or convenstion) for wiring that sort of socket.
Here's the question: is it safe to leave the humidifer attached and run it in passover mode (off)
Yes, that fine.

Cheers,

Bill
