What kind of bed pillow do you use?

Post by reefdreamer » Sun Nov 23, 2008 7:24 pm

I have been having trouble with leaking from my ultra mirage ffm and think it may be because of my pillow. I am a side sleeper. I am having a hard time though giving up my $90 temperpedic swedish neck pillow. I just can't bring myself to cut it. I see there are several cpap pillows...are any of them memory foam?

RD, guess I was lucky in my search for a cpap pillow.
I tried two of the commerical pillows and they were terrible.
I sent them back. I'm a side sleeper, too.

I found a Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Neck Pillow on sale for $40.
I slept on it for one night before the slicing and dicing started.
I now consider it the perfect cpap pillow, but that's just me.

If you're interested I can send you the pics of the mods I did.

I use the papillow. Not memory foam but I find it to be extremely comfortable. Here's a link for a home made solution;

I found this an issue as well, being a side sleeper, and discovered the
Chiro-flow pillow thanks to a forum member. LOVE my pillow!

I use a small to medium sized buckwheat hull pillow. It's small enough and flat enough that it doesn't interfere with my mask when I sleep on my side. (I use a nasal mask, but I'm assuming it'd be fine with a FFM, too.) And since it's filled with hulls, I can mush them around to fit my head and neck just right. When it's time to wash the pillow case, I simply empty the hulls carefully into a big container, wash the cotton case, and then put the hulls back in carefully.

I've had this pillow for about as long as I've been using a cpap. These things last a long time if you take care of them.

I don't know anything about the pillows made for cpap users, though.

I uses a high density memory foam pillow. I'm mostly a side sleeper and toss from side to the other quite a bit.

That's right. I'm a cheapskate.

You might want to do a search above for "pillow" and you will definitely find all kinds of suggestions for purchase and modifications that are quite remarkable in helping with our mask issues. I have to sleep on my side for therapy to be effective; and I really like my PaPillow. Though pricey at $60, it has made a huge difference for me in allowing me to sleep rather than fully waking up every time I turned over because I had to punch up the edge of my pillow so that my exhale vent wasn't buried in the pillow.

This pillow, as you will see here
http://www.papillow.com/how-it-works.cfm
holds its edge, and allows you to just roll over and not remain vigilent to punch up the edge. There is a notch for your shoulder, and your hose and vent easily hang over the edge. This pillow is firmer than most, but probably not as firm as buckwheat.

chiroflow, all the way. i've had mine for about 6 months.. got it right before i was diagnosed with sleep apnea.. haven't been able to sleep with a different pillow since. i got one for my son, and one for my boyfriend for this christmas. my chiropractor sells them for $60 but he said that's just a little bit above cost for him.. so retail might be more other places. it's basically a water pillow that has a regular pillowtop. i fill mine up all the way. love it love it love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i know there are other water pillows out there but this brand is totally worth the money!

I did a google search for the chiroflow pillow as it looks promising -- although I will not give up on king size so am out of luck as it doesn't come in that size.

It seems it can be purchased for around $35.00 or so online so in comparison to other specialized pillows is very reasonable in my opinion.

In regards to pillows: I also am a side sleeper, actually I am a 4 side sleeper...side, back, stomach, side.

I actually use two pillows. The bottom pillow is a regular pillow, made from regular foam. The second is an artificial down pillow, with hypoallergenic materials. This is soft and "scrunchy" and I mash it so my head is on the pillow but there's room for my Quattro full face mask. BTW, since starting therapy, I don't sleep on my stomach much...the mask isn't very comfortable when lying on it.
