CPAP and enhanced appreciation of music

Post by wlk » Sun Nov 16, 2008 3:23 pm

Last night my wife and I attended our first live symphony concert since I began CPAP therapy in Feb. of this year. The program included Bach's Third Brandenburg Concerto, a Mozart bassoon concerto, and Hadyn's Lord Nelson Mass. Through that music I discovered yet another way my life has changed for the better. The music lived for me in ways I could not remember ever having experienced. My properly functioning brain was transported into the music, lifting me above the fog that was my former life. I heard nuances, details, and felt lifted in ways that were not possible before CPAP. I was able to enjoy every note of the long concert without fading into the bleak, exhaustive fog I used to feel.
It is wonderful to feel like I am living life anew!

Wow, wlk, the benefits of CPAP never end! Great news you're doing so well, and appreciating the upside of therapy.

Superb photos by the way, did you take them? Into photography myself, and have some (I thought were) beauts of butterflies myself, but very mundane compared to that one, what a corker!

Oh, yum. What a great program. Our Choral Society did the Nelson Mass last year. I loved doing the whole thing, but the opening "Gloria" -- ah, well, it can't be described, can it? Hope they had a good soprano soloist for you in particular. That's an especially challenging part, and when done well, it's SO powerful. Well, I could go on, but I won't. I'm so glad even your music appreciation has deepened as you have healed. And your photos are wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us.

Very cool, wlk!

I'd been on cpap for 10.5 years before a new titration study sent me into BiPAP territory. I've been using the new machine for three weeks, and I've had a few bad nights (last night, for instance, our not-quite four-year-old woke me up and that was the end of good sleep for the night) but mostly better nights than in the recent past. I told my wife that I felt less irritable, and she said, "So you noticed?" Ha!

I'm a performing songwriter, too, and almost always play solo. The other day I surprised myself by thinking about asking a friend if he might want to work up a few songs. It didn't hit me till a few hours later that it was something I'd never even have considered a few weeks ago.

Hope your treatment continues to go well! (By the way, very nice photos!)

What about the flip side - using music to relax us and promote better sleep? Anecdotally it's known that Gregorian chants promote slower brain activity (beta? alpha waves? the internet searched proved fruitless), so pop in a tape and relax yourself to sleep.

mmmm i'm getting all warm and relaxed just thinking about it

(a virtual beer to whoever can find an actual published study on the effect gregorian chants on brain waves while awake or asleep, yeah i'm too lazy to do it )

I achieved a similar nirvana with my BOSE music system after ear irrigation.
Actually, in all fairness, being alert, awake and rested makes everything taste, smell, feel and sound better.
I too found nothing but anecdotal support for gregorian chants and brainwaves. It's compelling though.
Two and 1/2 years on the mask and counting.
