Hip/Outside Thig tingling/Pain

Post by Zoot » Sat Nov 08, 2008 7:09 pm

I am supine with my left leg out straight I am fine. I lay on my right side I am fine. I lay on my left side or on my back with my left leg rolled out, and I experience tingling that turns into a burning cluster of pain in my outside left thigh. The BiPap is making me sleep unless my thigh burning/pain wakes me up. I am downing 800mg of Motrin before to try and head this off and it isn't working.

Zoot,

I'm not a doctor nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn last night . However, I have gotten this also in the past. A couple of times over the past three years and it usually lasts for a few weeks. Copy, paste and read this link: http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=a00340. If you are concerned, please seek attention, mine clears up after a short period, usually a few weeks at the most.

Hercs Dad is absolutely correct about the diagnosis of your burning thigh. It is not related to OSA and is not a serious medical issue (however much it bothers you ). It is fairly common and at least you know how to avoid it.

Yea, I've had that Burning Thigh Pain (Meralgia Paresthetica) when sleeping on my back. It feels like your thigh is on fire - like the muscle is being torn right out? I never slept on my back before cpap. I asked my sleep doc if it was common for people on cpap. He didn't know what I was talking about.

I have had the same pain and also in my groin area. I went for an MRI of my hip and I need a total hip replacement.

I have pain in my left hip and down the left leg thru the knee. My orthopaedist says the MRI shows arthritis around a specific nerve that travels down thru all that area and that is what is causing my pain. A 'Selective Nerve Injection' by an anesthesiologist helped alleviate the pain for a while, but it has to be repeated after a while (3/6 mos. =/-). You really should see a neurologist or orthopaedist to determine what is causing the pain and what they can do for it. There are some types of nerve pain problems that, if not dealt with, result in loss of use of the limb. Better to have it checked and find that it's something that can be easily fixed than not. I'm not a dr, just have a lot of nerve and joint pains.

GSbuck - what you have is sciatica, from the sciatic nerve in your back - nothing at all like meralgia p. and not really related, though the nerve that does cause meralgia does go through the groin area where it gets trapped and that causes the burning, but only in a relatively small patch on the outer front part of your thigh - and you can tell it's more of skin-down problem than an internal muscle one and does not affect movement at all. It is also not related at all to hip arthritis, though that is often felt in the groin area.

Thanks, but the particular pain I have is not sciatica, per my orthopaedist. It is a different nerve that runs more toward the front of the thigh instead of the back like the sciatica. He didn't give me a name for it, tho. There are just sooo many things that can go wrong with nerves that it's always best to get it checked out by a dr.

I get burning in my left thigh and my doctor said its inflamation of verclose(SP?) veins. And an antiflamatory perscrition works to make it go away for a few months.

yep I agree Sciatica, problem with the L4-L5 vertebra, may also have lower back pain at times, pain can run through you forrest gump buttocks (feels like hip joint pain) down the back of the leg spiraling around it all the way down to the big toe.

Only treatment I know that works to relief it is traction from hanging upside down in a inversion table. 5 minutes in it at about 45 degrees every morning 3-5 times a week seems to help. Sciatica pain can come and go, helps to take a Aleve when it flares up. You don't have to hang completely upside down for it to work. They have machines supposed to apply traction but the inversion table does the same thing. LifeGear used to make a good one better than teeter's but they stopped making it. teeter's cost about $300 and is no better than the Ironman 1000 at walmart for $147.00.

Depending on which disc is causing the problem, the pain can radiate from the buttocks down the leg, where you feel the pain can sometimes indicate which lumbar disc is the cause:

Here is a free video of some stretching anyone can do which may help with the pain:

Thanks, Snoredog, for the video. will try those stretches!

But I've had sciatica. Did have surgery on L4-L5 a couple of years ago. This pain is different and goes down the front of the leg instead of the back, different nerve entirely. Had MRI. The 'Selective Nerve Injection' that I had worked until I had some other female surgery a couple of weeks ago. What they do to women's legs in the OR is a crime! Probably more than you wanted to know....

Is it ok if i am using inversion table for just 10 minutes daily? Will it get results and make me feel better?

you waited so long to ask the question, you'll have to consult a spirit medium to get an answer.

No, don't treat yourself! See a doctor (orthopedic or neurologist) and get a proper exam, tests and diagnosis for your particular problem, then you'll get a treatment plan for you personally. Don't use any equipment like inversion or otherwise until you do as you could do more damage than you already have.
