On my 3rd Remstar Pro M Series on a year

Post by dderrick » Mon Nov 03, 2008 9:31 pm

I am on my third unit in 12 months. Each unit fails after a period of time and the problem seems to be related to travel and airline flights. In each case the system board fails.

First Unit 1300 Hours. A problem was noticed after it stopped accumulating data after returning home from a flight. The total blower hours would be recorded but Therapy hours and other data was NOT accumulated, The Auto-On would not work. Prior to failure, occasionally the unit would not be turned off using the center on-off button. Occasionally the lights would blink several times when it is plugged in.

Second Unit. 850 Hours Flight from the east to the west coast. In the first week into a two week trip I noticed the lights would be blinking on the machine when I returned to the hotel room. At the start of the second week "Service Required" appeared on the display and the blower could not be turned on. One entire week without sleep - Argghhhh!

Third Unit. 30 Hours. Picked up on a Thursday and starting to fail on a Monday. Flight from Southeast to Chicago. After setting the unit up in the Hotel room and plugging in it turned on by itself without touching the on-off switch. It can be turned off but will re-start on its own after about 30 seconds. Each time you turn it off it stays off for 30 to 45 seconds but restarts by itself. When you look at the display the pressure setting shows on the display the blower sounds like it is at full pressure. The only way the unit will remain off is to unplug it. Tonight I will have to plug it back in and it will start by itself. I'll bet when I check the therapy hours in the morning they are not accumulating.

You don't mention if you are using your humidifier. If so I wonder if water is getting into the machine when packing it up? I'm sure you aren't checking it with your luggage, right?

Did you check the machines as luggage, or carry on?

Thanks for the reply.

It is not being checked as luggage and is always being carried on.

Water is not getting into the unit. Bwfore travelling the de-humifier is always removed from the unit and completely drained and then re-attached before it is packed in the carry on bag.

I would think it would be very unusual to have three go out in a year. While the "M" series is not as durable as the "Classic" Tank it replaced there have not been that many failures. As Gumby mentioned most of the reported failures have been due to the poor design of the intergrated humidifier which had a tendency to put water in the unit if it was moved or bumped. The later design of the humidifier with stagered inlet tubes was an attempt to fix this problem.

I have a "M" Pro that is 2 1/2 years old that has now been deligated as my back up with 5000+ hours on it. Even with a major leak problem with the intergrated humidifier it has not given me any problems at all.

Your luck must be running in a negative direction. Remind me not to stand next to you if a thunderstorm comes up!!!!!

Let us know what Resperonics says...if anything. Do think it is possible some sensor or other is subject to damage from changes in cabin pressure?

Who is supplying you with these machines? I want to make sure I don't buy from them.

Have you contemplating buying from cpap.com? No problems at all with my M Series Auto bought from them, and I've travelled with it extensively.

Cheers,
B.

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

You've referred to them as "units", so I'm guessing you had the whole thing replaced... but I wanted to make sure... these are three distinct units, not the same one being repaired, right?

I was wondering what Babette is asking. Did they all come from the same supplier?

Did that supplier get a faulty batch????

Or better still, does you supplies only order repaired units, not new first run products. Jim

I re-read your first post, back in June.

viewtopic/t35979/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=31 ... 82#p272582

I agree with something along the lines of what some of the others have said......you need to find out if these are re-furbed units they're giving you......or new ones......or just what the heck is going on. SOMETHING isn't right.
I think I'd be getting hold of Respironics about it. Do you have the serial numbers of the previous machines you had?

I think I'd be looking into getting a less expensive machine to travel with, too.

Or am I doing something wrong when this happens over & over to me? Time to start asking questions. Somewhere there is an answer. Are we starting to see a pattern?

I had problems with 3 Respironics BiPAP Autos not recording data consistently.
My 4th machine is a ResMed and it's working just fine.

The first three were probably "M"eries, they can't do data that's a known.
