We talked about this before. I don't think we "debunked" it, though. What they are saying is that it's good for ELDERLY people, who develop sleep apnea in old age.

But it's murder on YOUNGER people. So, if you have sleep apnea NOW, it's too late, you're not going to benefit from it when you're elderly. Or maybe you will, if you survive it now.

At least, that's MY take on it.

And may explain why two elderly people I know refuse to die, despite being very good, teetotalling, solid church-going people, who should have died young, if only the good die young.

Look, they're great people, they've just reached a point where they aren't real functional nor happy, but they keep hanging on. I think their shelf life has expired, but no one is recycling them. Hello? God?

Cheers,
B.

Babs, would I be wrong to assume that what you haven't said is that they're dealing with health problems? I mean, you don't want to get rid of them just because they're dusty or something?

The two people I was talking about are 95 years old, frail, not always lucid, and spend most of the day napping.

I'm not talking about spry 70 year olds, people. Add 35 years to that, okay?

Maybe they spend the day napping because they have apnea, that's what I used to do before the BiPap.

Just ask my boss.

I didn't mean to imply that you were talking about us spry people, Babs. sorry.

But here is a question along these same lines. (I don't want to change the subject, and I've already been sort of reprimanded for that) I read an article recently that one of our presidents from the past cured his apnea. It was William Howard Taft. His name was mentioned by someone a couple of months ago relative to this disease, but this article says he somehow cured himself of it. How did he do it? I have not found an answer to this yet. Was he one of the fortunate ones and does this seem to verify the points made in the study mentioned?
thanks,
Jay

It looks like he lost excess weight to handle the issue. Other than that the only other "cure" is a tracheotomy.

As President of the United States from 1909 to 1913, William Howard Taft’s minimum body mass index was 42 kg/m2. This article presents evidence that he suffered from obstructive sleep apnea, manifested by excessive daytime somnolence, snoring, systemic hypertension and, perhaps, cognitive and psychosocial impairment. As president, Taft’s hypersomnolence was severe and obvious, but never prompted official discussion of his fitness to govern. Within 12 months of leaving office, Taft permanently lost over 60 pounds. His somnolence resolved. As Chief Justice of the United States from 1921 to 1930, he was not somnolent. President Taft’s case illuminates historical puzzles of his performance as President, raises public awareness of sleep apnea, and informs discussions of presidential disability and the 25th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

I have the same bad habit (changing the subject in threads), so feel free to hijack.

Not everyone agrees Taft had OSA. But it seems probable. The author of the following article concluded that is was the loss of weight that helped his problem, whatever it was:

Oh, I was being snippy about previous posters, not so much YOU. Just clarifying my original post.

No, trust me. They nap because they are OLD. Old age is not a curable disease. It's a fact of life. No matter how well you take care of yourself, don't drink, don't smoke, eat right, go to church 7 days a week.... Old age will get you.

Which is why I'm on the Jerry Garcia Diet - Live Fast, Die Young, Leave a fat ugly corpse anyway.

LOL,
B.

Reminds of the old joke: When I die I wanna go peacefully in my sleep, like my grandpa--not kicking and screaming like all the passengers who were in his car.

That Garcia dude could PLAY, though!

I am religious. But seven days a week? You haven't been trying to date monks, again, have you, B.?!

Sheesh! I'm NOT dating the elderly! The two old people are my best friend's mother and my grandfather. My best friend had to quit her job two years ago to stay home full time with her mother, who wasn't expected to live more than six months. My Grandpa finally got talked into moving into assisted living after a couple of falls at home and a bout of pneumonia.

Mom is 7th Day Adventist, Grandpa is Southern Baptist. Trust me, they spend every single day doing their religion in one form or another. Both lived within walking distance of their churches.

Cheers,
B.
