Help with central apnea...any experts out there that can explain it to me. My google search scared me a lot.

central apnea
Re: central apnea
Do you have central apnea? Have you had a sleep study (PSG) yet? Are you using an xPAP machine yet?
Untreated sleep apnea - whether from central's or from obstructions, IS a big problem!
There are possible treatments for central sleep apnea, so before you panick, give us some context - why are you so worried?
As for the signing in problems.. try checking the "keep me signed in" option when logging in - -that may help.

Re: central apnea
Hi there, its me again.
Here is some background. I had a sleep study done and months later the doc emailed me and said, looks like you have apnea. I was told that I would have to have another sleep study for titration. Did that and went home. A month or so later they called and said that I should drive to Apria and pick up my CPAP.
I am a teacher and its my nature to learn about things and I have been trying for about a month or two to educate myself about this. I am overweight and it never occured to me that I could be having centrals. I honestly thought it was partly my weight. I begged and finally threatened and got the sleep study results emailed to me. Here they are:
FINDINGS: Diagnostic Polysomnogram (PSG)
Stage 1 4%
Stage 2 73%
Stage 3 / 4 14%
REM 10%
Central Apneas 49
Obstructive Apneas 41
Mixed Apneas 5
Hypopneas 36
Total Respiratory Events 131
Total Recording Time (minutes) 485.9 min. (8.1 hrs.)
Total Sleep Time (minutes) 388.0 min. (6.5 hrs.)
Total REM Periods 2
REM Latency (minutes) 194.0 min. (3.2 hrs.)
Sleep Efficiency Index 90%
Sleep Maintenance Index 89%
Apnea Index 14.7
Apnea / Hypopnea Index 20.3
Apnea / Hypopnea Arousal Index 20.1
Longest Apneic Event (seconds) 28.0 sec.
Snoring Level (1 = Mild : 5 = Severe) 1 - Mild
Relative to Body Position No
Relative to Respiratory Events Yes
Myoclonic Index 0.8
Myoclinic Arousal Index 0.3
Baseline SaO2 94%
Lowest SaO2 89%, Stage 1
Cardiac Minimum (bpm) 54 bpm-NREM, 76 bpm-REM
Cardiac Maximum (bpm) 114 bpm-NREM, 103 bpm-REM
Cardiac Average (bpm) 80.8 bpm-NREM, 89.7 bpm-REM
This nocturnal polysomnographic sleep study showed evidence of
mild snoring. It also showed evidence of mild to moderate
obstructive sleep apnea with desaturations and arousals.
The patient will be rescheduled for auto -CPAP-titration.
The EKG recording showed no abnormal rhythm .
Also of note was a myoclonic index of <10 on CPAP. Clinical
correlation for possible PLMS is not indicated. If there are any
questions regarding this patient, please contact us at the Sleep
Lab.
Any help interpreting this would be greatly appreciated. Here is what I know: It took me a LONG time to get into REM and I spent the majority of my time in the lab in stage 2. I also see that my 02 was ok. What is myoclonic index? I also don't understand why I am having centrals.
Thanks in advance
MIchelle

Re: central apnea
Everyone spends most of the time in Stage 2. REM latency= No known definite clinical correlates. It's likely sec to sleep apnea. So these are not what you need to worry about.original poster wrote: It took me a LONG time to get into REM and I spent the majority of my time in the lab in stage 2.
Do you have CHF? Ever had stroke? Do you take morphine, oxycodone (opioids) etc?original poster wrote: I also don't understand why I am having centrals.
If not, there's no clear reason (idiopathic).
You need a CPAP/ BiPAP titration study. If that doesn't resolve your breathing issues adequately, Adaptive Servoventilation (ASV) may be a more promising strategy. Talk to your doc about it.
Myoclonic index: Number of time your leg/ arm twitches during sleep. In some people, it may happen 50/60 times an hour with the potential to disrupt sleep. In most people, esp with lower index, t has no clinical consequences. So don't wrry about it.
