Is that your PSG number, or the number you're getting off your machine nightly? 107 AHI? Seriously???

They told me my 61 was SEVERE. I hate to think what you're diagnosis is. Morbid OSA?

I think you are in early stages of therapy. You are reacting normally for early stages of therapy. Your brain function sounds normal for a sleep deprived patient. Is it reversable? I dunno. I think you can get back a measure of it. I just don't know long term if you've damaged your brain functioning.

There are alot of correlations between Alzheimer's and OSA. No one's bringing Alzheimer's patients back, that I know of. But cpap patients are reporting a certain increase in brain functionality. I think I've increased from where I was pre-therapy, but still feel degraded from where I was 20 years ago. I'm 43, by the way.

Give it some more time. Keep tweaking your therapy. And good luck!!!!

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

You're depriving your brain of oxygen, agreed? You have to accept that your brain is adversely impacted by that, correct?

Just out of curiosity, have you attended one of these training classes or heard a new joke while you were actually using a cpap consistently and before stopping using the cpap consistently, were unable to remember the subject?

The issue could be compounded by a lack of connectivity in the brain as well, due to low seratonin or other chemicals that work with the nerve receptors.

I'm pretty sure sleep apnea could contribute to your symptoms, but only a medical professional can evaluate your specific issues and recommend a treatment plan.

There is so much that is unknown about the brain that effective diagnosis is more trial and error than "exact science".

I wish you well in your quest for results.

Yikes.
I often wonder if it is a side effect of Apneas or antidepressants or what and if it is brain damage.
Many people report improved memory with proper therapy. If it is brain damage, then you had certainly better make sure it won't get worse!
It seems worse now that I have used Cpap every night for 33 nights in a row. Like I am in a fog. The first few days every time I have gone on Cpap are great then it is not near as good. The longest run of use I have had in 20 years is about 6 months.

Ditto. What are your objective results?

Babs - Yes my study was 107 last year and I know it is worse now. You are funny and crazy and my age , is there a twin output Cpap?
Where were you when I was single last month?

Too late! I found love on Craigslist. He just bought me a ring, in fact. Paid a whole 25 cents for it out of the gumball machine at Big Lots. I kid you not...

mth712,

An interesting line of discussion. What you describe is what I fear most. I saw my mother go through this loss of memory - she was a shocking snorer - undiagnosed apnea. I felt it was starting to happen to me but with the equipment I now have am happy my memory is as good as it should be for my age.

You are approx the same age as my oldest daughter and at your age you really need to pull out all stops to get your therapy working. It will reverse. I have seen Rested Gal comment on this issue in regard to her own experience & am sure she will happily say that therapy has made a big difference.

Good luck

Mike, now that you are being consistent with your treatment (right?), does your data confirm it is therapeutic? Maybe your pressure needs have changed. Just from my own experience, a month may be a bit soon to expect a lot of obvious difference.

Before treatment and until getting the treatment optimized, my short term memory and thought processes were severely compromised. While I have greatly improved and my cpap treatment is enviable, I have not returned to my former "brilliance" - still a bit of a dull bulb. I still have sleep problems due to limb movements, so it seems broken sleep for any cause is still bad for the brain. Aside from how is your treatment going, how is your sleep otherwise?

Brain Fog and that lack of motivation or ability to do anything but sit there and stare blankly at a computer screen at work are most debilitating symptons.

I was only diagnosed with Sleep Apnea a couple of weeks ago, and last night was the first time my AHI has been under control so I still feel sleep deprived. The reason I am really hopeful that my mental faculties and energy will come back is that, with the help of my family doctor, I have tried a variety of stimulants and meds to help me through the fog whilst we got to the bottom what is up with me. After getting no effect from ProVigil (something worth looking into for you IMO as a short term help whilst you get your SA under control as, in my research, it didn't seem habit forming, has very few side effects and isn't a stimulant like amphetamines), I tried Adderall. If I take 50mg spread throughout the day I have found I am almost as sharp as I was before, and 30mg just about kinda gets me through the day.

Personally, I'll do whatever it takes to get rid of the fog because I know there is so much I can do when it lifts.

Good luck.

I should have also said that for the first week I was using my machine, my average AHI was 46 (being able to read your AHI of your machine is critical to your treatment IMO, otherwise how will you know its working? At some followup appointment 6 months down the road?).

I very politely hassled the DME and the sleep clinic continually, pointing out how high my AHI was. At first the doctor bumped my pressure up 1cm. 3 Days later it wasn't making any difference so they got me in for a 2nd Titration and changed my pressures again. Last night I had an AHI of 1.2 and an AI of 0.2. Hopefully they'll continue to be low. Hopefully it'll fix the brain fog too.

Getting your SA under control might help you get off the antidepressants as well- don't they often also dull your brain?

Good luck and I hope you can stick with it- this site is a great resource for figuring out what it all means to you.

Just curious, what was the pressure on your first script and what is it now?

14/8 for the first titration, and 15 / 10 eleven days later (although I haven't got the prescription for that one yet- I picked up a copy of my sleep report from the clinic after signing a release and read it off the report )

AHI don't really mean much epecially before therapy, what matters most is AI after therapy. Trying installing a PDF printer on your computer like CutePDF Writer (its free) and print your daily report to a PDF file then post it on photobucket or other hosting site, then give us the link to look at your report.

You can download the PDF writer here for free:
