No joke-skunk scent in CPAP-need help pls

Post by betsy946 » Sun Oct 05, 2008 10:23 am

Late last night - my border collie wanted to come inside - got on our bed and "then" we discovered she had been sprayed - scent is intense and instant - I tried to go back to sleep with my mask, but scent was so intense, I buried myself under the cover...any ideas to take the smell out? I'll be under it tonight (however it smells) as I can't stand the drowsy feeling today. I will be ordering pur-sleep today (thanks for the great sample of lavender that I have already used up).

If anyone has any skunk smell remedies, hubby is really cranky about this-house smells wicked...

Having had that smell sucked into my machine from skunks wandering through the neighborhood (on numerous occasions) while the windows are open, I can say that it doesn't really stay in the machine all that long (although it SEEMS like a long time). On the other hand, the source of your "fragrance" was much closer.
If your machine is one with a data card, I'd say remove the card and try running the machine for awhile.....AFTER cleaning/changing the filter(s).

AND WASH all the bedding!!!! Sprinkle baking soda on any carpet and let set a good while before vaccuming and immediately empty the vaccum! Set a bowl of vinegar in the room where it can't get spilled by the dog (or any cats). Don't forget washing your mask and hose well. Maybe spraying the air w/Febreeze or one of the UNSCENTED air fresheners. I sure would NOT want to be mixing any of the man-made scents w/skunk fumes!!!!

Wow!

I can relate. Last summer I was riding my bike to work when I got sprayed by a skunk. I thought I had avoided the worst of it so I continued on into the office. I entered the office and told the guys I had been sprayed with a skunk... and of course no one believed me... until two or three minutes later when the smell started to waffle through the air. I could finally smell it myself and knew it was bad... left the office and went home.

The smell gets on things and last for weeks even if they have not been directly hit by the skunk... simply touching an item that has been sprayed and touching another item that was not sprayed is enough to transfer the scent.

I had to throw out my shirt, pants, underwear, backpack and cycling gloves as those items all took a direct hit. I had to wash the scent off myself and found the only thing that was effective was mixture of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and liquid soap. I don't remember the ratio so do a Google search to find that. This is the only effective solution to the scent issue... simply washing will not remove it.

You will need to treat absolutely everything your dog contacted inside the house... including the dog. If the dog did get into your bed then everything she contacted needs to be either tossed out or cleaned with that solution.

I was able to remove the scent from myself but it lingered in my place for weeks despite all my measures.

Tomato Juice or femine hygiene products are supposed to help remove the skink scent from the dog and bedding.

Tomato juice solution for skunk smell is a myth.

LOL at the other suggestion.

Wash all the bedding. Use a reasonable amount of 20 Muleteam Borax. It really does remove odors. Use the soak cycle and the second rinse cycle. If you don't have a second rinse cycle, send it through the wash again, this time without the borax.

As for the machine: If you have a fully-data-capable machine, take the card out so you're not recording the event. As Den suggested, allow the machine to stay hooked up to the hose and mask for a few hours - maybe all day. Wash the hose and mask with mild soap. Assuming the inside of the machine, mask and hose did not get any direct spray on them, it should be only a matter of time before the machine once again smells reasonable.

I know there are detractors with regards to ionizers, but if you have one, I'd set it up in your bedroom to remove any lingering odor. They really do work, and latest models have ozone removal systems and are relatively safe.

Tomato juice doesn’t work. Maybe making some Bloody Marys for yourself will help.

For the dog:

Mix together in a bucket:
One quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
one teaspoon liquid dish soap

Keep the solution out of their ears and avoid their eyes and mouth. Wash thoroughly with the solution for five minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clear water. Repeat if necessary. Use the solution immediately after preparation. Do not store unused solution.

Removing skunk spray is most effective during the first few hours after spraying.

For the CPAP, change the filters. Wash the hose, etc. It will be fine. Been there, done that.

Wash bedding, etc.

With luck, the dog will learn to stay clear of the black "cats" with white stripes.

Doing a Google search on "removing skunk smell" or "removing skunk odor" will get you lots of reading material.

Eh, don't expect a Border Collie to forgive and forget that easily!! They are just as likely to carry a grudge and be more determined than ever to "get even"! They are a wonderful but very strong willed breed. They are extremely intelligent and quick and need to be kept busy.

The border collie was probably trying to "herd" the skunk.

Find a pet store. Pet Smart is generally open on Sundays. Look for a product called "Skunk Off." I would try squirting that liberally on the mask, wiping it, re-squirting, getting it into all the joints, let it sit, soak, re-squirt, etc.

Then clean it thoroughly with detergent and water, maybe rinse in vinegar, maybe use some baking soda in one rinse or to scrub after or while cleaning with detergent, but don't use vinegar and baking soda together, whatever you do.

Unless the skunk sprayed the mask, this is totally unnecessary. And who knows whether it is safe for the mask seal. Just change the CPAP filter and do the normal weekly cleaning.

My dog has been sprayed several times. The recipe I posted above is simple, cheap, and effective for the dog or anything else the skunk sprayed or the dog rubbed directly against with skunk on his/her fur. (Check that peroxide won't fade your fabrics, etc.)

Yeah, I think I misunderstood the original question, which I thought was asking how to remove the smell from the mask.
