My new medium Comfort2 leaks and I would like to order a Ultra Mirage FF. Any time I move while sleeping on my side it leaks around my mount. My concern is using the online sizing (also used to order Comfort II FF mask) on the CPAP.com website a Med/Standard is recommend. Referencing MM's comments (below) the recommend sizes are not always correct. Any suggestion you can give me on selecting the correct size for a Ultra Mirage mask would be appreciated. I live in Dubai and if I get the size wrong it will be a pain to return it.
Has anyone else used a small mask and standard cushion? Can using different size cushion cause a problem? Does the manufacture recommend mixing and matching cushion size and masks?
Thanks, ALAN
MM's comments:
I sure wouldn't call the Comfortful2 mask a top rated mask! It is not comfortable and mine would never work properly. I beat a path back to my DME and had them get me a ResMed Ultra Mirage Full Face in a Small with standard cushion. There are actually 6 combinations so they use a 3D template to get the right one. Get the smallest one that will just cover your mouth and it won't leak in your eyes. They first tried a medium and it leaked air into my eyes because it was too large, although a medium mask of several other types fit ok. They did it by looking at your face instead of using the proper templates. Now I can sleep on my back or side and not fool with the mask all night.
Need Help w/ Sizing - Ultra Mirage Full Face
Re: Need Help w/ Sizing - Ultra Mirage Full Face
Alan,
You cannot use different sized cushions on the UMFF. If you have a small mask, you must use a small cushion, a medium will not work. Within each of the sizes you can choose between the Shallow and Standard, which has to do mostly with nose size I think. You can call Resmed and ask them to send you a template. They will happily agree to do so, but you may or may not receive it. I ordered mine six months ago and have yet to see it . I ordered a UMFF through CPAP.com and used their sizing guide. It said I should get a medium, but having read a couple of posts that said you should go a size higher, I decided to get the large. I should have gotten the medium. I can make the large work with a liberal application of Mack's silicone putty, but I can see that the next size down would probably have fit better. I will probably buy a medium UMFF from CPAPauction next and see if maybe that will make a difference. Good luck finding your mask!

Re: Need Help w/ Sizing - Ultra Mirage Full Face
I've found the CPAP.COM sizing guide to be generally accurate. In my case (and for this reason, I've made this recommendation) my measurement (mid eye-line to mid chin) fell exactly between the Medium and Large sizes. I went with the Large and was glad I did. I also went with the "standard" option.

Re: Need Help w/ Sizing - Ultra Mirage Full Face
I had a good experience with the CPAP.com sizing guide.
The DME set me up with a UMFF size meduim-shallow. After suffering with it for several months, I tried the sizing guide. It said I need UMFF medium standard.
I ordered the UMFF medium standard and it is a far better fit.

Thanks for the advise folks!
Re: Need Help w/ Sizing - Ultra Mirage Full Face
This will take longer, but ResMed will send you a full set of three 3D templates! If not, then look on line and make the measurements very carefully. The DME and I thought it would take a medium standard cushion mask, but it wound up taking a small standard UMFF mask and it works great. I can turn over all night and maybe touch the mask, but remain relative leak free all night! There is a template on line for the ResMed Quattro mask and it probably works almost as well once you put teflon tape on the swivel to keep it from leaking. Masks that are one size too large either leak in your eyes or your chin gets into the mask, both of which make it not work properly!alanhj13 wrote:My new medium Comfort2 leaks and I would like to order a Ultra Mirage FF. Re: Need Help w/ Sizing - Ultra Mirage Full Face
The Vertical dimension is the only one you can go by. The online thingee on cpap.com has a bunch of different measurements it uses to determine size for a variety of masks, many of those dimensions don't apply to sizing of this mask.
Vertical Dimension: In a mirror, hold up a ruler and measure from the center of the pupil of the eyes vertically down to the indention below the lower lip on the chin. Measure with your mouth closed naturally.
The mask cushion should be measured the same, from the top of the "center" of the cushion down to the part that rides on your chin, again measuring from the center of the cushion where it makes contact with your skin. So if you measure the cushion from center-to-center, your vertical measurement should land just at or slightly under that dimension. You don't want a cushion that is marginally small for you, because if your mouth relaxes and opens a bit you don't want the lower part of the cushion to land in your open mouth. If anything, the cushion should be slightly larger.
You cannot go by sleep lab recommendations, while they fit a lot of masks on patients everyday they do so for their benefit as a smaller mask will tend to leak less under higher strap tension, that is their main concern zero leak for obtaining a good titration, your comfort is secondary. But at home you want the mask comfortable while maintaining acceptable leak you most likely won't apply as much strap pressure either. Tighten the straps too much it crushes the cushion leaving a crease, then the mask will leak like crazy at that crease.
A Medium or Standard Ultra-Mirage measures 3-3/4" vertically center-to-center. Think my vertical dimension is 3-5/8" so that one works fine for me.
The top of that cushion should ride aligned with the center of the pupils of the eye. So when you get a smaller or larger mask the top still should ride in the same place. Get one too small it will ride down on the nose, this leaves a nice divot for you to wear the next day and you will have tons of leak. The indention at the top between the eyes should keep the mask in place there, if the bottom also rides in its place it will keep the bottom of the mask in place. Too small or large you get out of those natural indentions then the mask moves all over and rides up and down with lots of leak.
Very simple concept when you think about it.
