Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
Hi Babette,
I'm interested in finding a mask with nasal pillows, so I checked out your link about the Nasal Aire II. If I remember correctly, you stated that you are a side sleeper (I am, too) and have had really good results with this mask.
After looking at the picture of the mask, I noticed that the hose runs along both cheeks. Isn't that annoying when you roll over onto the hose?? Does the hose location bother you at all???
Just curious!

Re: Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
Good question Abby and I was wondering the same thing! Thanks for asking her and I look forward to her reply.. Looks like the side hoses you could pinch while sleeping with them being around the neck.

Great questions! I'll also await Babette's answer : )
Re: Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
I was asked why I chose the CL2. I have to say that when I met Babette at a local event and she had already done more research than me (unbelievable and a gal after my own heart) I chose a different mask than she did at that point. And then when she fell for the NAII, I thought about trying it. I didn't because I thought the hoses on my face would cause rashes or irritation not to speak of marks on my face, and the thought of prongs in my nose didn't sound wonderful. Now that I'm more experienced, and have found out the mask doesn't contact the face in this way, I'd like to try it.
Back to why I chose the CL2. I chose it because of all the positive postings it has gotten on the forum from satisfied users. It was between the CL2 and the Headrest. I liked that the CL2 had so many choices in masks that it came with. I was able to try the nasal mask, direct seal, and nasal pillows. My prior experience with nasal pillows on the Breeze2 wasn't great. They pressed under my nose due to their design, and rubbed my nares. The CL2 is designed to gently approach the nose from underneath and not depend on the upper lip area as support.
I also liked that the mask didn't contact my face. This was probably the best selling point. I get rashes easily and was tired of headgear straps contacting my cheeks and more causing rashes. The CL2 headpiece does come further down on the forehead than I thought and did rub on my forehead and eyebrows. I was given and bought another padacheek for the CL2 and this issue has gone away.
Another reason why I went to the CL2 was that it worked for my massive amounts of hair. I wear it in a ponytail at night. I like the hose out of my way, so the mask I choose needs to allow for my ponytail and the hose. This mask does that, especially now that I have a hose hanger.
I'm thinking of trying the Headrest as I mentioned earlier. It is perhaps even more popular than the CL2. If I find people don't have issues with mask condensation I'll try it for certain. As the CL2 has quite a bit since the nasal pillow piece is large and open to the cool air and the hose on the headpiece also has condensation. I get a nose full of water from time to time - a surprise awakening!
I think that's it. PM me again if this does not address any questions you may have.

Re: Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
I just thought, Babette, does the NAII have condensation issues? That's a lot of hose on the mask exposed to air. . .

Re: Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
Thank you for answering that for me.. It sounds like a good one, all except for the condensation.. Maybe the water cannot find it's way out with this being ontop of the head?? What exactly is the headrest your speaking of?? Thank you again!

Re: Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
It looks like the tubing on the Nasal Aire II would rub on your neck all night.. Not sure about you but I sweat alot and move around alot. I hope Babette can provide a clearer answer for this..

Re: Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
I have a Nasal Air II and have no problems with the tubes running along the cheeks, even though I sleep on my side and mostly face down.
What I have done is build elastic head gear so the tubes me at the top of my head, where they then join the air tube. This ensures the nasal tubes go straight up the nose and are kept firmly in place as the tubes are secured at the top of my head. Turn overs can then happen without the tubes flipping off your ears and losing the Nasal Air from your nasal passages.
I do have a couple of problems though.
My nasal passages are oval shape, so the round Nasal Air pads are hard to fit in and leak in a smaller size is used.
I also think the device could do with a "soft doughnut" around the bottom of each nasal tube to further help stop the leakage by sealing against the underside of the nose.

Re: Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
I lIked the Nasal Aire11 but the tubing seemed to press on a nerve on my neck or face so had to stop using it a few years back.
I used a couple of masks in between. Just a few months ago I found the Snapp, another nasal prong mask but different setup.
Johnno - It has the doughnut like thing at the bottom of each prong and that does help the seal. The prongs are a little more oval and they are more pliable that the Nasal Aire 11 prongs so fit my oval nostrils well. There is not all that tubing either to deal with. There is just a neat easy on, easy off headgear.
I read here that not many people like the Snapp. I think it's great! It has no forehead piece (I really dislike those) and nothing to bother your nose bridge.

Re: Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
Just wanted to bring this to the top again. If you watch the videos and with a little adjusting this really looks like it would be most comfortable. Certainly worth a try and I will ask for it as my first and hopefully last choice on Monday for my titration..

Re: Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
It would help if people would TELL ME THERE'S A THREAD TO ME....
Okay, here we go:
1) I don't feel the side hoses. I just don't. No, they don't crush when you sleep on them. Other users also tell me they don't even feel the side hoses. I would liken the feel of the side hoses to the same feeling as a standard three or four point headgear system - very minimal feeling. You get used to it so fast, you don't notice it.
2) Rainout issues with this mask are probably the same as other masks. It's an individual thing that you need to address individually. Your need for humidification is going to drive this. You do need to do all the standard things: Lower your machine below your head, cover all hoses with fleece, use the lowest humidification that works for your therapy needs, and raise the ambient temperature of your sleeping room, if necessary. If I had intolerable rainout with this mask, I wouldn't be using it.
3) This mask is more stable for me than any other mask I've tried. Pillows cushions were constantly shifting on me, and rubbed my nares and upper lip raw. This mask stays in place and does not cause me nasal or upper lip irritation. It's counter-intuitive that prongs would be more comfortable than pillows, but they are, FOR SOME USERS. Not all users agree on all masks.
4) I'm a 98% side sleeper - both sides. I flip back and forth all night long. The mask stays in place, and is very comfortable.
Hope this helps!!!

Re: Babette - Nasal Aire II Question
I do not wear this mask around my neck. That sounds very uncomfortable for me. I wear it "Ponytail" style above my head. I prefer routing all my masks and hoses over my head to down the front of my body. I don't like fighting the hose all night long.
See pix of how I wear this mask here:
http://s124.photobucket.com/albums/p36/ ... aise/CPAP/
As I am laying down, the short hoses connect to the main hose, and the main hose runs off my pillow at the top, along the mattress where it meets the headboard, and off the side of the mattress to the machine.
Cheers,
B.
