i give up

Post by emak » Mon Sep 29, 2008 7:01 pm

leaks, mask farts...if i could stay just flat on my back it would be ok...but i toss and turn way too much...i can't even lay on my side at all without a leak with my mirage quattro......i always end up pulling the thing off at night without remembering how it got off so whats the point anymore. and i can't do nasal masks at all, i always end up waking up choking in a panic. i mean whats the point in even trying anymore 3 months and i've had about 3 nights where the thing stayed on. my worst desat during the study was 89% anyway with 27 partial apneas an hour that's not too bad is it?

Steady on there, Emak. I know it's hard. Took me 6 weeks and 8 masks to find one I could actually sleep all night with.

You say you can't do Nasal masks. Why? Did you try using one with a chinstrap and/or taping your mouth shut?

Have you tried the Nasal Aire II? That's the only one I can keep on my face all night without fiddling and leaking and farting.

Also, have you tried taking a daytime stimulant to help you through this period? I took Provigil from May to August 2007 to get me over my intial hurdle.

I know you don't really want to give up, or you wouldn't be posting. We're here for you, buddy. Let us help.

Huggers,
Babs

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

well the chinstrap has nothin' to do with why i can't use a nasal mask...i just end up getting a sensation of choking and wake up with a racing pulse over and over. i have a deviated septum and have trouble w/ dry stuffy nose all the time anyway. i tried nasal pillows first and then a comfortgel (worse ever) then mirage quattro, i thought was going to be good but no i either wake up to air rushing in my eye or i just toss the damn thing without realizing it

Yup, sounds familiar. If you are choking, you might need a higher pressure setting. What is your pressure right now? Most folks need a minimum of 10cm to breathe easy. Any less than 10 and I'm gasping for air. It amazes me how many folks here are titrated to less than 10.

You need to just keep trying DIFFERENT masks. One nasal mask isn't the whole of what's available out there. You need to try something that will work for you.

Chin up, buddy. We'll figure it out.
B.

Tell yourself that giving up is not an option. Then figure out how to make it work. We are not all like Carbonman It takes some of us months to get near where we should be. But you have to keep the mask on and you have to keep trying until you find one that doesn't drive you crazy. Go back to the auction and try another one. And keep trying until you find one that you can live with. Sell the ones you can't use. There is one out there for you, but you won't know if you don't keep trying. We don't even know you and we want you to suceed. You have to want that for yourself.

Hang in there, girl. We're here for you.

BTW... What the heck is a "partial" apnea? You either stop breathing or you don't, right? Someone clue me in here...

Cheers,

I am new here and am learning so much about this subject myself.. But I would say as the others have not to give up on this. I don't know how old you are but I am 42 and have all sorts of health issues and alot of them I feel could of been avoided if I had found out about this sooner. As others have told me that this sleep apnea could kill you.. Don't forget that.. And when you do get this thing working right you will feel better..

I have same physiological issues you do...deviated septum, nasal congestion, can't hack the nasal pillows and can't use a nasal mask due to congestion and/or panic attacks. You need to be patient. There is no microwave "done in a minute" solution to OSA or even finding the right mask for that matter. I've suffered through the same leak problems, in the same places, as you and have had watery eyes many a morning, but it's not time to quit. I would say that 27 events per hour is not good enough. The Quattro mirage works great for me, but obviously not for you. So what! Go to cpap.com and look at the Full Face masks (FFM) and search the mask topics on this forum. There IS a mask that will work for you.

Stay positive. Talk to us. We'll help you out as best we can!

Good for you Michelle and Skantner!!!!!! Great posts!!!!!

Michelle, I'm 43 and have so many medical problems, I'm an embarrassment to myself. But with the grace of a year of cpap therapy, and a new boyfriend who is very supportive about helping me eat better and exercise more, I have HOPE. Hang in there and keep trying!!!

Hugs all around,
Babs

Hi - oh Emak - my heart goes out to you - I'm giving you a hug - please don't stop trying - it wasn't easy for us all - there are changes one must make, which is so hard - but changes also come with cpap therapy - for instance - eat right, go to bed same time every night, don't use alcohol, don't smoke, good bedding, strive for good relationships with friends and family, (if you are upset when going to bed, I promise you, it's gonna have a nasty effect on how you sleep ( I suggest you look up on internet about the importance of sleep and sleep phases) Love yourself, you are unique AND you will come right - read this FORUM - you will learn very quickly. And when you sleep - but a pillow behind your back - (it is supportive) and also very important is to sleep with a leg pillow (hour glass shape) The pillows are nice and comfy. Emak, if you stop, you surely will end up with a heart attack or even worse...a STROKE. So, be nice to yourself today, be happy, relax and don't think about tonight. Maybe, some relaxing excercises ? Good breathing and stretching ? Keep asking questions - help is out there. Greetings from South Africa - Marietjie

Thanks Babette and the same to you!! I so want to change my health since finding out about this.. My doctor told me straight up that I was healthy now but if I continue as I am I won't be so healthy in the future. This is just one small step for me and alot of other things I need to work on.. But, one thing at a time..
