AFRIN again
gonna have to stop this dagum 500mg Niaspan for thinning blood.... was just driving along yesterday(in the car thankfully) coming back from shopping and my nose just started a free flow gusher...so i calmly pinched it closed with a hanky and after arriving home and icing down, applied a dose of Afrin .it clotted right up.....Sometimes i think the Flunisolide causes bleeds .. anyone have a similar experiance ?

Re: AFRIN again
What's weird is that every time I google "Flunisolide side-effects +bleeding" I get cached data that says something about bleeding and side effects. The links themselves lead to articles that say nothing about bleeding. But because it appears in the cached data on google, it almost looks like there has been a concerted effort to remove anything remarking on nasal hemorrhages with regards to Flunisolide. Apparently, one side effect of Flunisolide may be the increase in effectiveness of anticoagulants. Why not check with your pharmacist to make sure the combination is safe? If the Niaspan was prescribed by a doctor, I'd check first with him. If not, I'd stop it immediately and check with a pharmacist.deerslayer wrote:gonna have to stop this dagum 500mg Niaspan for thinning blood.... was just driving along yesterday(in the car thankfully) coming back from shopping and my nose just started a free flow gusher...so i calmly pinched it closed with a hanky and after arriving home and icing down, applied a dose of Afrin .it clotted right up.....Sometimes i think the Wcauses bleeds .. anyone have a similar experiance ?

Re: AFRIN again
DreamDiver, all three meds were prescribed from the VA. two weeks ago i was attaching a pigtail to a new stove and was bleeding from three places on my hand before i even knew it. as far as getting ahold of a doc, for the most part all i ever get is some stranger nurse on the phone that never relays the call to the primary. maybe when i go back in the end of oct. i can vent. for now, i'm through with the Niaspan crap..dizzyness & all

First - thanks for serving.deerslayer wrote:DreamDiver, all three meds were prescribed from the VA. two weeks ago i was attaching a pigtail to a new stove and was bleeding from three places on my hand before i even knew it. as far as getting ahold of a doc, for the most part all i ever get is some stranger nurse on the phone that never relays the call to the primary. maybe when i go back in the end of oct. i can vent. for now, i'm through with the Niaspan crap..dizzyness & all
Second - definitely talk to a pharmacist at least. Their advice is free and often useful.
Does the VA assign you a specific GP, or is it just whoever is on staff at the time?

I've NEVER heard of Niaspan (niacin) described as a blood thinner.
But then, I don't know everything!

A suggestion
Although I am not familiar with the general bleeding, using Vasoline every morning may help keep the nasal passages from drying out which makes them more likely to bleed.

Re: AFRIN again
don't think they were prescribing as a blood thinner Randy, just as something to bring down cholesterol. not sure though ? anyways i haven't had any bleeds since stopping the flunisalide & niaspan. i had nasal capillarys carterized twice while in the military because of free flows. funny thing was i was on the base boxing team then. Perchance , the Vaseline sounds like a good idea. ...fingers crossed (knock on wood-my head) this is the first winter i haven't been sick. maybe it's got somthing to do with not chasing after the deersanotherRandy wrote:I've NEVER heard of Niaspan (niacin) described as a blood thinner.

Re: AFRIN again
I have 2 bleeding disorders and one clotting disorder. The clotting disorder is a genetically determined higher level of homocysteine, which is mentioned in the side effects. So, I thought there was something about niacin that I should recall; maybe it is related to increased clotting. Since the indicators and the levels of bleeding disorders may vary greatly, the testing may show a false negative, but false positives are pretty much outruled.
The following quote refers to the long-acting form of niacin, which has been shown to have some side-effects that are contraindicating its prescribing.
FWIW: Niacin - side effects and warnings, Medicine.org
Blood clotting problems have been reported during treatment with sustained-release niacin. Caution is advised in patients with bleeding disorders or taking drugs that may increase the risk of bleeding. Dosing adjustments may be necessary. Low white blood cell number (leukopenia) and slightly increased blood eosinophils have also been reported.
Elsewhere on that same page, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories are suggested for the headache pain caused by niacin in some folks. NSAIDs can reduce clotting and increase bleeding tendencies. I am not supposed to take them with my disorders.
Best wishes,
