Nose Pain

Post by daf » Wed Sep 03, 2008 7:59 pm

I am fairly new to CPAP (about a month and a half). I'm using the swift LT with the small size pillows. the problem i'm having is I wake up in the middle of the night and my nostrils hurt. it's not on the inside but around the opening. i've tried adjusting the headgrear but it doesn't help. i tried the medium size pillow thinking that maybe the small was too small and the problem seemed to be better. But with the medium size the cone that goes in the nose is too large and it tends to fold and create a leak.

I am looking forward to sleeping through the night. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

I did the same thing, I did have mine to tight. It is just supose to go right on the out side of your nose. Not inside, where it can rub. It is just all about making adjustments. Try making them while you lay down. that may help. Also making sure your face is clean from oils that way it does not rub when you move at night.

I too went a size up and that stopped the rubbing for me. I wonder if there is a difference in the shape of one nasal pillow mask and another. There probably is. Perhaps the thickness of your nasal pillows is thinner than mine and therefore collapsing. Hummm, curious.

Wearing your mask a bit looser may help, even if it feels like it might unseat - when air is pumping through it might puff up the pillow just enough to keep it seated whereas if it is too tight it might collapse. Even the smallest adjustment sometimes makes a difference.

I started using Opus 360 Nasal Pillow Mask which is similar to Swift LT, and I had this pain and I started using FESS cream and it's more less OK now also spray I think it's called NOSOIL helps.

Go to drug store like Walgreens, look for some Ayr saline gel and put some of that in your nares, KY gel may get you by,

Yeah, I've had that same problem, too, and I understand about the sore nose. I'm currently using 3 masks - the Swift Lt, the Mirage II, and the Ultra Mirage. Most of the time I use Mirage II. But when those times occur when my nose gets sore, I'll change over to the Ultra, because it fits around the nose, not up into it.

I have to go to see my technician at Apria today and talk to him about my progress (I doubt if he'll be much help). I'm going to ask him about trying out a couple of other hoses before I settle on one. The flue and cold season is not too far away, and I always get colds and even the flue in the fall, so I know I can't use any of these when my schnozzle is stopped up. So I want something that lends itself well to mouth breathing, and of course, a FF mask.

What do some of you all out there do when you have a bad cold? Just wondering.
thanks,
Jay

I have been using the Swift II for almost a year now and in the beginning I also suffered from Sore Nose But after about two months the soreness went away. I assume it was from the Nose getting tough to the touch of the Pillows. I also used a water based Gel on the nose at night and Vaseline during the Day

I'm also new to CPAP (almost a week) and I use the Mirage Activa mask and my nose is so sore. The last three mornings when I wake up my septum is sore. I can't tell why. I put the mask on and I can't feel it rubbing anywhere. I sleep good but waking up stinks.

I feel the same. Since I have been trialing the Swift LT, my nose seems to remain a bit tender all of the time versus the Swift 2 which I got used to. I did find that I had to use the smaller pillows and keep the mask loose so the outer pillow can puff up. This has helped me. I do use a type of cpap lotion that I received a free sample of, or chapstick once in a while. Lisa
