Make your kids try it out

Post by Billy6 » Tue Sep 02, 2008 11:07 am

I got tired of the sniping, so I made my son try the blow machine for an hour last night. We were all watching TV and I brought out the stuff and I asked him to try it for an hour (naturally I ramped up the pressure from 9 to 12). He agreed so I fit the mask over his face and nose, adjusted the straps and pushed the button. I could tell he was whining but for some reason, I just couldn't hear him. At least he sees the deal and knows what can happen when you get 25 pounds overweight like I did.

You go Billy!!!!! Just don't tell me he can get a quick high if he puts a stoke in front of the filter!

PS, did he last the hour? What was his reaction after?

It's going to be okay in the end; if it's not okay, it's not the end.

He did last the hour. I then shut the machine off & took the headgear off of him, and he excused himself. And you know, as well as I do, that no self-respecting kid is going to let a parent know how they feel about anything. I was hoping he'd get colic from swallowing the kicked up air-- but, no luck

Did you also tell him that in many cases, sleep apnea is hereditary?

Agreed. My husband has had sleep apnea all his adult life, even when he was at "Air Force weight."

Your son may or may not develop sleep apnea as an adult and it may have nothing to do with weight....

Not to beat a dead horse, but many people here are thin (some rail thin) and have apnea. Many others gained weight as a result of the apnea. I know doctors often recite the mantra "lose the weight and the apnea will go away with it", but it ain't necessarily so. Losing weight has many benefits, but being "cured" of apnea generally isn't one of them.

Me to...Infact I wish that weight was the cause. Then this all would go away. I as well in the last two years had weight gain from untreated apnea. I have had it from a very young age and I was always really thin. But after my last baby and the Apnea just getting worse, The weight has been a struggle to get off. I am starting to see it come off, but it is a struggle. In fact at my sleep study the tech told me most of the patients that come in are thin and not overweight. And that usually weight is a factor when your neck for a woman is over 16 inches and a man is over 18 inches. Mine is only 13, so they said that is not causing my throat to colapse.

But losing weight will make a person feel so much better, and avoid other medical issues as well.

On the line of teaching your kid a lesson, I bet he will never say anything again. LOL
