Chronic Sinus Problems with cpap machine

Post by twinkle toes » Sat Aug 30, 2008 11:34 am

I use a ResMed machine with variable pressure and I use the nose pillows. About every two weeks I get a severe allegic reaction where my nose and my eyes (particularly my left eye) runs constantly and I feel sick...like I have a bad cold. I have told my pulmonologist about this repeatly, but I'm told it is just a reaction nothing to worry about. I take Zertec to help relieve the symtoms but, all that seems to do is make me sleepy. I hate to go without using my machine but, at this rate I am so confused I don't know what to do. I clean my nosepiece and hoses every day with peroxide and then rinse repeatedly. Any suggestions?????

Using a saline nasal spray, like NeilMed saline spray or NielMed's neti pot sinus rinse might help. Others can chime in here since I don't use the Neti Pot sinus rinse. I do use the NeilMed Saline Spray sometimes (an hour before bed) and I put a small amount of Ayr saline nasal gel in each nostril with a Q-tip every night. I have seasonal allergies and this really helps.
I clean my nose pieces every day - my hose, the rest of my mask and humidifier water chamber once a week but not with peroxide. I use Ivory Soap Classic Dishwashing Liquid and rinse them. I leave them to air dry. I have a spare hose in case it is not dry by bedtime.

I used to know someone who went by the nickname of "Twinkle Toes"........or "Twink" for short.

Anyway......you haven't told us which mask you're using.
You may have the wrong size pillows.
What pressure range is your machine set to? If it's wide open (4 - 20) there could be things (leaks and snores) that are causing the pressure to rise too far and exacerbate the situation.
Too much humidity can cause nasal congestion.
Do a saline nasal rinse (if you're not already). Some medications don't "help" and only make the problems worse.

Den
(5) REMstar Autos w/C-Flex & (6) REMstar Pro 2 CPAPs w/C-Flex - Pressure Setting = 14 cm.
"Passover" Humidification - ResMed Ultra Mirage FF - Encore Pro w/Card Reader & MyEncore software - Chiroflow pillow

You should also check to make sure air is not leaking into your eyes from the mask. This could cause eye problems.
