Where to buy "gumby tape"?

Post by DigiSage » Fri Aug 15, 2008 11:38 am

I'm considering taping my mouth at night. I hear people talk about gumby tape. Where can I buy it? Searching here for it was difficult because apparently there is someone here named "gumby" and that showed up for most of the searches.

I don't know what gumby tape is?! (did you try the search using the quotes, as in "gumby tape" ?)

I use the 3M micropore tape, and some chapstick on my lips before putting the tape on. I use one strip placed horizontally across my mouth. (The width of the tape is around 1" or 1.5" I think).

And I rub hand creme on the tape in the morning and let it soak in before taking it off (eliminates ripping your skin off in the mornings).

Apparently applying some milk of magnesia to the lips and around the mouth before putting the tape on also helps to remove it in the mornings.

I've been reading something about blue tape but I have no idea what that is either!?

IMHO its probably better NOT to tape your mouth shut. Consider the safety factor if you need to sneeze, cough, or vomit.

Sneezing or coughing is not a problem with the tape for me.
Vomiting - yes indeed some people need to watch out for it. Or if you have sinus problems tape may not be the best idea.
For the rest, don't go to bed drunk and tape your mouth shut! You can also vomit into your FFM and re-inhale it.
As with anything else, use your own good judgement.

I've decided to tape because I mouth breathe like crazy and the pap-cap isn't working for me anymore. So I'm trying to get a recommendation for the best kind of tape to use for this purpose. The most comfortable I guess.

Any recommendations? And suggestions on where I can buy it?

Just this week I have started taping my mouth as I decided that mouth leaks were probably contributing to my frequent waking and daytime sleepiness again.

We had just run out of painters tape, so my only quick solution was band aides. I have been pleasantly surprised by how much better I have slept. A band aide is not a tight fix, so I have also lowered my mask so that it now lays across my top lip. I also move my lips so they are pressed together before I put the band aide on.

I hope to find the two inch painters tape this weekend. It should work better and be less expensive in the long run.

I use J&J 2" wide "Hurt-free" tape (available in almost any drugstore, Wal-Mart, etc). It has a very slight stickiness but comes off easily --- almost too easily. So I cut a strip long enough to single-tie behind my head. I find it stays put, doesn't hurt to remove and can be pulled down in an instant in the event of problems.

No prob.
You can buy it pretty much anywhere I think. Walgreen's, the pharmacy, online...
Here is the product info link. Just make sure you get the right width. I thought mine was the 1.5" wide but maybe it's 2"?? It should be wide enough to cover both upper and lower lips. The length of the tape goes horizontally along the mouth and should be long enough to go from left to right, like 4 or 5" maybe.
If I had more time I'd draw a picture!

Might be my fault: i called it gumby tape because it is bright blue.

It is 2-inch wide Delicate Release (?) painter's tape. We buy a huge roll
of it at Lowe's or Home Depot. It works even better than the expensive
micro-pore stuff: it rolls off beautifully every morning, and my mouth has
stayed nice and even comfortably taped all night (with a small side slit opening
for any emergencies). AND i can find the huge roll in the middle of the night
if i have to untape for pills or a drink of water--yeahhh. (No affiliation or stock holding.)

At DME the other day i asked about buying a Hybrid or continuing taping.
She said the taping was probably much cheaper and certainly easier (!).

So there.
