I've only been on CPAP for a few weeks of my life...I have a used ResMed S7 Elite w/ heated humidifier, and it may be my imagination but it's started sounding like the motor is a vacuum cleaner...when I breath in it gets loud, and breath out the motor chokes almost all the way off, and it just doesn't quite feel like as much pressure as it was at first (but maybe i'm just getting used to it?) In other words the air feels like it blows hard enough but the resistance when I put my mask on seems to cause the pressure to die.
Anyway does it sound like my machine is breaking down, is this what happens when they do?
I've also thought about having it checked and if it's not breaking I'll sell it and just buy a Goodknight 420 to use all the time....would I do good to do that?
Is my S7 machine breaking down?
they only last about 5 years before they go kaput.
Have you cleaned the filter on the rear? if that is clogged it won't be able to suck in any air. By chance it didn't get tipped and get water inside it did it? That sorta rusts out the bearings. dsm has repaired a few but if you are not equipped to do that you might check with Resmed they may have a flat-rate repair fee.
As for to replace it? There is the AutoSet II in the S8 chassis which would function similarly to the S7 and have a few more features. You do get AHI info from the LCD. Software is available for it. Which is best kinda depends on your SDB and pressure, budget features wanted etc.
I like my 420e I use it all the time it seems to treat me the best and well the reports with Silverlining are about the best you'll find with any machine. The Sandman will probably replace it eventually, but I don't see much advancement in the Sandman over the 420e, that little sucker was ahead of its time and still has a lot of life left in it, it has more features than some of the new ones coming out.
I'd have to see the reports off the Sandman before I can suggest that one. DeVilbiss doesn't yet have any software available for standalone use, so they shot themselves in the head with that one.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...
My S7 Elite was kind of doing the same thing. It became really loud over the years. I just got a new Resmed S8 Elite II and it is very quiet compared to my old unit.
I am not sure if your unit is working properly and I guess really the only way to determine that is to take it to your DME and let them test it.
