Getting much more sleep with CPAP, BUT.. don't feel good

Post by matthew76 » Thu Jul 31, 2008 10:44 pm

I'm finally beginning to get over the insomnia, and despite still waking up 2-3 times, am getting more than a few hours of sleep. But when I wake up in the morning, I still am foggier and worse off than before. I've been on C-PAP for 6 months and am getting very frustrated. Even when I wake up during the night, it takes a while to get my bearings. I still am terribly spaced out and foggy and can't concentrate well. I feel that daze that others feel. I'm 32, and just can't live a normal life like this. Instead of more independent, I am much more dependent on others. My emotions are very flat. I struggle through the day instead of living.

The thing is, I don't seem to be snoring or gasping. With my anxiety, I am conscious of my breathing and overbreathe when I get into bed, but can that make me wake up like this?

And I have continuing stomach issues that I wonder are from the CPAP.

My pressure is the recommended 9, and I've tried the full face mask.

I'm really considering using an apnea mouth guard. But my nose seems to be the problem. Do some apnea people continue having problems despite the right treatment?

Hi Matthew,
I'm sorry to hear you not feeling better yet. Have you discussed the daily use of Ativan with your doctor by now? What did he say? Are you still using the same amount?

Many of the symptoms you describe - being dazed, foggy, spaced out, flat emotions, lack of concentration may be the result of the way Ativan damps down your brain activity.

As for waking up 2-3 time a night - it happen to many of us. When it next happens try to tell yourself "Oh yes, I'm awake. That't alright. Time turn over and sleep some more."

O.

Hi ozij,

Thanks for remembering me. I have cut down my Ativan use greatly and no longer take it before bed. I wake up a bit better but still badly. My doctor wants me to still take a half every day until I get off of it.

The stomach stuff worries me equally, but perhaps that's a subject for another board. My doctor took another blood test because I still wasn't feeling well, and the liver function was up more - but that was the only abnormal thing. She thinks it's just my weight gain.

Any other suggestions?

What type of stomach issues are we talking about? Do you have GERD. Sometimes if you haver GERD pre Cpap treatment. It can cause damage to the little flap that closes off to your stomach and the pressure can cause it to open up if it has became weak. If this is the case being on a bipap or Cpap with cflex instead of strait Cpap will help that.

There are several other sleep disorders that can cause your sleep issue and brain fog. I was still having major issues still am. Found out I am B12 deficent. Started my B12 injections and I am starting to feel some what better.

I still some nights still sit up till 2 in the morning because of my Insomnia as well. Most of it is do to the fact my centrals have been really bad and I know when i start to fall a sleep my bipap Auto SV start breathing for me and then I get pain in my chest from not breathing

But having the doctor run some Auto immune blood work as well as your B12 might not hurt any.

I get an achiness in the abdomen/intestines and gas. Does that sound like GERD? I also get some constipation. I have read that constipation is rare with CPAP, but does happen.

I asked my sleep specialist about hypersomnia, and he wouldn't rule it out but doubts it.

Thanks for your suggestions.

if it don't work one way, go the other, try your pressure at 8.0 instead of 9.0, if you wake feeling better, try it at 7.5 cm.

Go through the manual, set up the Ramp at 6.5 cm pressure for 30 minutes. Have difficulty falling asleep press the Ramp button, if still awake hit it again.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...
