Anyone fired for nodding off at work??

Post by CowboyDave » Wed Jul 30, 2008 12:36 pm

I was recently made aware by my employer that it is noticable I sometimes appear to be nodding off giving the impression that I don't care or am not interested in certain situations. I explained my sleep apnea and was basically told to get it fixed. I've had a UPPP, been on cpap, and now on bipap, still sleepy. Just curious if others have the same problem and what do you do. Living on No Doz ain't fun.

Two (educated) guesses......mouth leaking and/or your pressure is not right.
Do you wake up with a dry mouth? That's a clue to mouth-leaking/breathing.

Do you have a data-capable machine (and the software to interpret the data)?
In other words, does you machine have the capabilities to give data for apneas, hypopneas, snores and leaks?

If not, I'd suggest you "invest" in one. It would definitely be much less costly than losing your job.

What Den said, and.....

Skip the No Doz and get yourself some Provigil. It's prescription. My doc gave me enough samples to help me keep my job until I could get my therapy going well enough to live without it.

If you are Union, go NOW and start having conversations with your Union rep, and begin documenting this, for future need.

If you are not, then go talk to your HR department and ask them who you can talk to about your medical situation being accommodated.

Good luck!
