About to order equipment for 1st time..GoodKnight 420G?

Post by emak » Wed Jul 16, 2008 9:19 am

I'd appreciate some good advice.
I'm about to order equipment for the 1st time, and since I don't have good insurance or alot of money to burn, I guess I'll be getting that GoodKnight 420G Travel CPAP Machine without the humidifier (I live in Alabama, it's already humid enough I figured). Anyone else use this machine and like it ?

So is there any reason why I should not use that machine as my only machine? What's going to happen to me if I never use a humidifier once winter rolls around? Are they almost mandatory? WIll I regret not getting one?

Also, during my sleep study, I couldn't wear the nasal mask because air just kept blowing out my lips despite the strap. The way I see it, my only option is to tape my mouth shut, or get a full face mask? Is there anyone who actually puts tape over their lips out there? Or should I just get a face mask?

The 420G model is not data capable.

I'd suggest this one instead:

Hello, emak, and welcome to the forum!

The GoodKnight 420G is a fine machine, from what I've heard. I have the 420E, which records data so that I can monitor mask leakage along with apneas/hypopneas. Mine also adjusts the pressure output once it senses flow limitations.

Will you regret not having the humidifier? Hard to say - everyone's different on their use of the humidifier. I use my every day on heat setting 2. For me, the pressurized air dries out my sinuses too much unless the humidifier is on. You could check with the supplier and see if you can add the humidifier later on, if you want to save the money now. I think you can do that with the Puritan Bennett models.

Also, there's many solutions for mouth breathing in addition to the full face mask and taping. You can check the "Our Collective Wisdom" at the top of this site for various solutions. Some include: Polygrip strips, chin straps, and mouthguards. Personally, I like the mouthguard - it works just fine for me. Don't disregard the full face mask though - many in our forum swear by them.

Good luck, and take care,
Cathy

See if you can get the 420S at least. Did you say your insurance would or would NOT cover this? If your insurance will, get the humidifier as you might need it in the winter. If you don't no money lost, better to have and find out you didn't need than the other way around. I also use mine every day on 2 as AC will dry me out, in the winter I know it'll be much worse since I heat with wood.
