Do you guys recommend tonsillectomy?

Post by fogels » Sat Jun 21, 2008 10:13 pm

I am a 24 year old with a good BMI, yet I have moderate OSA. The ENT told me I have large tonsils for my age. I have had the HARDEST time keeping my mask on all night. (Last night got fed up and wrapped masking tape around my head and I still somehow got it off LOL) Do you guys recommend the surgery or do you think that it's a bad choice.
Thank you

You might send a PM to "Socknitster" concerning your question. She had that operation and might shed some light on what you'd face if you have it done.

As I remember, she posted a number of reports describing the healing process.....and none of what she had to say made me want to run right out and have the operation myself.

I would definately get a second opinion!

I went to the doctor initally for a deviated septum.

My first doctor said I needed them out and wanted to do a complete UPPP and fix my deviated setum all in one day... $$$$$$$$

I went for a second opinion and he didn't mention my Tonsills at all.

I asked him at the end of the visit if I needed to have my tonsills removed and he looked at me, shook his head and said "NO", however mine aren't enlarged but it just goes to show you how some doctors want to go for the $$$$$ gusto vs the good honest ones!

I'm not saying that you don't need your tonsills removed, i'm just saying whatever you do, get a second opion.

Tonsillectomy

I agree with getting a second opinion. And with the understanding that having the surgery may not "cure" your OSA. Sounds like you are considering the surgery due to mask struggles, but those will pass with time. A few days into treatment is probably not the best time to make a decision on that basis.

I've known 3 people who made the UPPP decision when they tried to use the cpap and felt they weren't going to be able to do it, and they all regretted not trying harder, because later they had to try again.

Now, if your tonsils are obstructing your airway (they may not be the cause of your OSA) and/or they are recurrently infected, that's another story. If you decide to get it done, just don't let the mask problems be your primary motivation.

I had a UPPP with tonsillectomy; the UPPP was useless, but the tonsillectomy took care of my recurrent strep throat.
