I am a new CPAP User

Post by silentnite » Fri Jun 06, 2008 2:35 pm

Hi,
I got my cpap machine on Monday and it is a F&P HC234 with a F&P 407
mask. This was prescribed by my Dr. I am having a lot of trouble with this system. I think the mask I have is to small but, that is what my RT gave me.
I have had only 1 good nite sleep with no problems. I used the ramp setting on Wednesday(just discovered feature) worked great. I woke up a few times when I thought there was water or something in my mask.
Anyway I was wondering if a full mask may be a better solution.
I am getting frustrated and I have been pulling the mask off during the nite. Any sugustions would be great..

I can't speak to the machine as I'm unfamilar with it, but the mack you have comes in a "one size fits most" If you feel it is to small, call your DME and ask for a mask exchange, most DME's have a 30 day guarentee - if the mask doesn't work for you, they try another. The mask is the hardest thing to get right, but if you're not comfortable with it, your therapy will fail. 5 days is long enough to feel it won't work. Some people like full face masks, others don't. If you find you are mouth breathing, full face mask are great. The only way to find out if you can use it is try it.

It sounds like rainout - its water condencing in the hose. Move your CPAP as close to the floor as you can and lower the humidity for starts

Starting out with the therapy can be very furstrating. There is quite a learning curve. Pulling off the mask is a common complaint, Are you even waking up when you pull it off? The first 2 times I pulled my mask off I only woke up because my husband smacked ( ) me and said "the therapy can't work if the mask isn't on". If you are awake, try to identify what made you rip off the mask (for me it was rainout) - get up, go to the bathroom, give yourself alittle break, and then go back, tell yourself you need this. I know it sounds like "Oh brother", but it is somewhere to start. Others who have had this problem will chime in with thier answers.

Good luck.

Check out the yellow light bulb and the CPAP FAQ at the top of the page. Most of your questions will be answered there. If not, come back here and post specific questions. Keep in mind that most of us NEED this therapy to stay well. Give it a chance and it will work for you too. All of us have been where you are now. Keep trying to make it work. It will get better. I promise.

The problem with IGNORANCE is you don't know what it is that you don't know.

Give it time too.

It took me about a month to get used to mine and I have been on it for 6 months now.

It is a hassle but with the right adjustments it will help you.
