Smartcard Reader

Post by gasparama » Fri May 16, 2008 6:23 am

After a successful download of data, after making sure that the USB port was checked under preferences, and after reading as much information as I could stand, there is now the message about the reader not being detected. Ugh. Any advice before I uninstall and reinstall the Encore program? This is infuriating.

I have mine installed under Virtual PC on a Mac so it's not a typical setup, but I get that happening a lot. Have you tried unplugging the USB lead and reconnecting? When that doesn't work for me I insert the card into the smart reader and then try unplugging and reconnecting.

I used to get that too and then I realized that the reader has to be plugged into the same USB port all the time. Whatever USB port you used when you installed the reader drivers, you have to always use that USB port. If you plug it into a different port it gets cranky.

Sorry to sidetrack, but I'm getting ready to purchase Encore Viewer w/ USB reader and am an avid Mac user as well. Since I've got a Quad G5 system, I can only use Virtual PC for Windows emulation. Are there any tricks I need to know of to get it working through there? I figured, worse case, I'd set up an old PC if needed, but was hoping to run it on Virtual PC.

If you are installing on Vista as I did it it took me a long time of trying. Look for a post by Mindy who told us to go into an Accessory program and type in something that keeps it from dissapearing when you go into the Encore. I don't remember exactly what it was though. It worked for me after I did it. No more missing data card.

I have Encore Pro. It went fairly smoothly. I installed exactly as people suggested on this forum for a PC. I think USB is a bit of a hit and miss affair in Virtual PC but then again so many people on here report USB/smartcard problems on a PC too. Encore Pro runs very slowly on Virtual PC but I've got used to that, the important thing is that I can get the data off the card.

One thing I've found when I insert the smartcard is the green light appears on the reader for only a few seconds before it turns red. While it's green I have to quickly select the download from smartcard option in Encore Pro for the reader to access the card. I don't know if this happens on a PC or it's just a quirk of VPC.

I'm running VPC 7.02 on OS 10.4.11.

Give me a shout if you have any problems and I'll try and help.

Oh, how could you ever guess?

Ok, I've followed all the advice on this board. I reread Mindy's suggestions, which I had already performed. My blood pressure's got to be goin' up by now. This is infuriating after if worked so well last night.

Any more tricks? I'll try anything. Just don't want to reformat the hard drive again.

My son's laptop (Vista) did the same thing but I thought it was bc I kept removing the reader. Can you leave the reader connected? You're not plugged into a hub, right?

I was gonna say - I thought Mindy's tips would help. It made sense to me. You are talking about the one where she says to make it auto start or something there?

What is your exact error message?

Yes! There is hope, even for me. DreamDiver posted the exact help that I needed.viewtopic.php?t=25096&highlight=card+reader+detected

It was even much easier than the detailed instructions from Smart Card installation files indicated. I had gone through this a couple of nights before when I accidentally installed EP1.6. But I could not remember how I had gotten to that particular method of driver installation.

When Vista is on, it is really on!

Now to the important stuff. Is the "large leak" the most important leak data? I had no minutes in large leak, but the "average max leak" was 120 and the 90% leak was 53. Do I need to go mask hunting again? One other question, even though my mouth is always taped, could the blow-fish effect cause the lleak rate to go up?
