ComfortGel™ Nasal Mask (Kindof Long)

Post by SalSessa » Sat Jun 04, 2005 8:30 pm

Hello ya'll...

New to CPAP (3 days) and lovin' it.

I am having NO problems with the machine, and sleeping like a baby!

Only problem is (common, I guess) with the mask. I think it (see subject) is supposed to be a good one, but I'm just not being able to adjust it so that it does not irritate me in one major, and one minor spot.

Seems the thing is really irritating the "upper lip" (mustache) area of my face. If I put it lower (like right above the upper lip line) it seems to be a bit too close to the mouth, no? And not sure if your supposed to put it right up close to the nostrils (too close, no?)

Also getting clipped to the right of the nostrils, right on the cheek. Causing a bit of a "pimple" looking raside area. I guess thats where I roll over and into the pillow a bit, causing the thing to press in.

Sorry, this is long.

But any advice on adjusting this mask?

I really need to make this thing work..........

You might try a different pillow? Don't know what you're using right now, but check out the "pillow" thread.

Thanks.

Still seems to do it (under the nose) even when laying on my back, with no moving around (although I'm sure the moving around causes the effect to be more pronounced.)

I'll check out the pillow thread.

The Comfort Gel was not a good mask for me, when I used it. Not at all. Way too leaky, and hurt. Some people like it, though. There's a mask for everyone. One person's disaster is another's favorite.

Unless you really, really like the Comfort Gel, there are other masks that you might like better. I'd suggest trying:

ResMed's Activa - nasal mask that holds a seal very well for most people and is worn with straps very loose.
Puritan Bennett's Breeze with nasal pillows
ResMed's Swift (nasal pillows)
Aeiomed's Aura (nasal pillows)

One more to add to the list:::::

Fischer-Paykel FlexiFit HC405 It has very few parts to remove for cleaning, fits like a second skin and is so quiet!

Thanks.

Yes. No matter what I do, it is "biting me" where it sits below the nose, and above the lip.

The fact that I have a mustache may be a help or a hinderence, but I have no frame of reference.

But, never-the-less, it is causing a painful area after only three days.

Back to the drawing board, and thanks for your suggestions.............

Again,thanks.

What are the most obvious differences (comfort wise, and efficiency wise) between masks and pillows?

Are they about equally uses, or is one preferred (in general) over the other.

Also, what (have you found) to be the best price / most reliable online source for purchasing these products?

TIA,

SAS

I had the same mustache problem see
http://cpaptalk.com/viewtopic.php?t=2848&highlight=
I ended up with the Swift - so far so good.
All of the masks/interfaces are designed to deliver the prescribed pressure, so finding the best fit for you is the challenge, don't worry about efficiency. If it isn't comfortable enough to keep wearing, any differences in efficiency are meaningless. Seek out what ever interface works, and buy online. Most DMEs will rip you off.

Mask types

Post by ozij » Tue Jun 07, 2005 9:11 pm

Welcome, SAS!
In some cases, very high pressure may limit your selection in masks - but always try to get the info from the manufacturer's site.

Apart from that, the most important thing is to find a mask that:
doesn't hurt,
let's you sleep in the position you usually sleep best in, and
doesn't leak

Leaks are a bother, and detrimental to the therapy.

My experience with one manufacturers nasal (nose covering) masks was bad, as was my experience with another's nasal pillows. I am now using a nasal pillows mask by a third manufacturer - the Breeze, by Puritan Bennet, and am very happy with it. Mind you, this one too took getting used to. It hurt my nose in the beginning, I used (and still do, most nights) a water based lubricating gel to make it feel better and seal better and even had to take a 3 day break after about a week because my nose was so sensitive. But it was worth it.
Think of it as something analogical to getting used to new shoes, or sandals after the winter.
O.

Hello

I use Proflie Lite mask, thats a gel molded mask and can moulded to the shap of your nose and mouth. I have worn thru one already and I find them comfortable for my flat button nose.

They call me "flat nose" If you see my face you'd know why! I have moulded the mask to my needs and it's been quite comfortable.
Been on CPAP for a while.....I had moderate apenoa

I had the same mustache problem se
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Thanks.

I tried changing out the "comfort gel" for the next smaller size, and it was actually worse.

The company I'm working with only uses Resprioncs masks, so I guess my next step is to try something online.

I keep hearing about Activa here, so I guess I'll start there. I just hate to waste a hundred bucks at a time experimenting.

Regarding "the stache." Seems the thing does not rub on the hair, but that little place (like you mention) _right_ under the tip/base of the nose. Rubs the skin raw. So much so that I had to put on a round band-aid on it just to get through the night.

Any other suggestions from "men with hair under the nose?" Or those in the know?

I have a farily bushy 'stach and was using the profile lite and it leaked a lot below my nose. Recently switched to an Activa and love it -- no leaks and comfortable as all get-out.

Of course, YMMV.

I know the MMV, but as many people have been giving good feedback on this mask, I'm thinking it's worth a shot at it. Of course, a $100 gamble is "what it is," though, and I understand that.

I've just been sitting back and taking it all in, and this mask seems to get steller reviews.

I may order one today...........

Hello SS,

As suggested by another poster here, check out Yahoo auctions, you may be able to find a couple masks there you might like to try, and for alot less than a new price. Just a thought...

Thanks.

But the idea of _even_ slightly used makes me a bit nervous.

I'll take a look, though...........
