Sinus pain, but not congested

Post by BabetteAtWork » Thu May 08, 2008 11:23 am

Hey there! I've got something new and interesting up my nose. My sinuses are aching, but I can breathe JUST FINE. No discharge, nada. Just PAIN.

Pulmonologist took me off the Claritin last week - telling me it wasn't doing me any good, and to let the Flonase do it's work. If it wasn't enough, she said to come back and we'd talk about Singulair.

Well, now I've got this pain. Been having it for about a week now. Ibuprofen works, but do I want to take that every day? What's the diff between THAT and taking Claritin every day?

Anyway, my coworkers report they are all having major allergy flares. Maybe it's temporary? Is it possible my pain is CPAP related? Any ideas?

Cheers,
Babette

Probably just allergies. They've been giving me hell down here in Okie land too.

Sounds like allergies. Maybe you have a sinus infection. The CPAP makes me sinuses worse. So if you are having allergy problems and aren't talking anything the cpap probably irritates it. Also I had to stop taking Flonase because it caused me to have headaches and sinus pains. So it also could be a side affect of Flonase.

Have you tried warm compresses for the pain? It's the only thing that helped me when my sinuses acted up.

I refuse to believe my Trusted Friend Flonase has turned on me. We've been together since 1998.... We've bonded... We've gone on trips together... I think we qualify as Domestic Partners... Wait, did you see her out with someone else? Do you have pix?

No, I haven't tried warm compresses. Usually I try Hot Showers. And Ibuprofen.

Hey, it's not DEBILITATING pain, it's just THERE. It feels like my nose is cold, you know? I keep poking at it, going "Hey, what's going on in there?"

I tried turning off my HH. Doesn't seem to make a difference between setting of 1 or setting of 0. Maybe I should try 2 tonight and see if that helps.

Thanks!!!

Welcome to my world partner!
I have had some of the same symptoms although I'm not out of the woods yet. I was given some advice to not use my humidifier and it's working so far.
Scroll down some topics and look for "I Give Up" some pretty good advice on this topic.

No, really? I hate to read those "I give up threads" since they tend to be useless flame-fests.

But if you say there's value there...

Maybe I should leave the HH off for a few more nights. I'm trying to remember when I turned it off... two nights ago? Pain seems the same so far, but....

Thanks Jethro!

Hi Babette,
I had the same problems as you about 5-6 weeks ago. My sinuses were totally clear, but man did they hurt. I went to the ENT and he had me have allergy testing, which was negative.
I used alot of hot/moist packs and they felt so good. I also tried using a Netipot, which didn't help that much, but did continue to use my homemade sinus spray. (water/salt/sodium bicarb). The ENT suggested putting some pediatric opthalmic bacitracin ointment up my nose, but I didn't do that.
I tried going down on my humidifier, thinking I had it too high and the heat was drying things out, but it made it even worse. Now I'm almost at the highest setting, and doing much better.
I think its a spring thing.
For you, it could be the stopping of some of your nasal meds. I get rebound symptoms when stopping meds all the time.
Also.....and I don't know your age.....but I have discovered that when I have hormonal fluctuations, my sinuses dry out really bad. I'm in menopause, but I know I'm still having fluctuations. Those symptoms were very obvious at the same time my sinuses were burning so bad.
So.......give your sinuses a little time to stabilize after coming off your nasal spray, use warm moist compresses, and increase your humidifier setting. Can you use tylenol instead of the NSAID or at least alternate them? I know it helped me through that episode.
Good luck!

sinus headaches due to allergies, due to sinuses being dried out, causes lotsa pain. You get that constant pain deep in the sinuses nearly behind the eye it seems,

taking Claritin D can make it worse, several rhino rinses and sleep are about the only thing that seems to get rid of it.

Allergens are so bad around here even my jack russell was having a hard time, he was out side hacking away trying to clear his throat and nose, when I saw him the whites of his eyes were all red, I took him swimming with me in the pool a few times and it helped a short while, so finally after taking an allerclear myself, I cut a benadryl tablet in 1/4 and gave him a quarter of that, about an hour later he was back to his old self drinking water again and his eyes went back to white.

We have 4 dogs so swimming with one isn't easy nor quiet since the other 3 were barking at us the whole time, the old black lab just freaks as he was a rescue dog and can't stand anyone in the pool, we have to lock him in the house if you want any peace.

Babs, If the doctor expected you to stop the Clariton they should have went on and put you on Singulair. I often take both Singulair along with Zyrtec in the summer.

Why did the doctor think it wasn't doing you any good?

I can NOT go without my allergy meds or I will suffer something fierce!!

Hope you get to feeling better real soon!!

The doc felt the Claritin was just masking symptoms, not solving any problems. The Flonase IS keeping my nose clear, but there is this sinus pain thing.

I turned up the HH to 2 last night. Feel about the same today. Possibly it IS withdrawal. Possibly it IS just how my body is responding to increased allergens right this second. Beats the heck out of congestion.

I'm going back for a follow up in a few weeks and I'll talk to the doc about it.

Thanks all! I'll try alternating the Tylenol and the IB. I'm a big fan of IB, so I often just forget about Tylenol.

I suppose I could get off my lard butt and use that Sinus Rinse I bought... I'm so lazy...

LOL,
B.

Allergy season hasn't seemed to hit here yet. I'm not looking forward to it when it does. I feel for all you who are already suffering.

Babs I hope you figure out what is causing the pain, it would drive me batty, but I think I would agree with you that it would be better than being all stuffed up.

Hey Cougar girl, haven't seen you in a while! Should I admit that I was in Portland a few weeks back and didn't even THINK to call you?

I'M SLEEP DEPRIVED!!!!

That's my excuse, and I'm stickin' to it.

How's the world treating you these days, Cougar?

Hugs back,
Babs

Things are going pretty well here. It's a bummer we couldn't have gotten together when you where down here. Most exciting thing going on here has been me getting a new mask a few days ago (Still loving the NAII, just needed a spare since it was time for my 6 month replacement), and getting new glasses. Oh and as of a week and a half ago I've lost 71 lb since July (I just had to share )

I do try to keep up with the board I just don't post much.
