Mask/Vent question

Post by Mark_Ferman » Mon May 05, 2008 12:15 pm

I have been using a mask for over a year and until I just shaved it has been great. I just moved on to the ultra mirage full face mask and I have a few comments and questions. I hope you can help.

1. My old mask had a firm elbow coming off the mask, the new one has a swivel and I hate it. Not sure why but I do.

2. My old mask had no open vents, I had an inline vent in my first part of the tubing. The new mask has vents up near the top of the nose. Can I block these off?

3. I had a plastic firm tubing piece that went between my hose and my mask (hose connector). I had to remove this for the regular tubing to fit my new mask, and this is not making a good connection (bandaide was needed and then duct tape) the hose kept popping off - it was cool the first time, but... is there a special size hose connector that I need? I will be speaking with my DME and just want to know what to ask for.

I was amazed that the ulta mirage was quieter sounding, even with the inline vent (which is where all of the noise used to come from). I am also amazed that my ahi was lower as well as my leak rate.

Thanks for the help.

Mark, do not cover those exhaust holes! They are necessary for getting rid of CO2.

Okie Dokie, then how come my other full face mask never had any vent holes? I do have the big sideways vent in the hose itself,

I read that I shouldn't plug the holes in another thread - which is why I asked myself. It does seem weird to me that my previous mask didn't have any vents.

Thanks - I will keep them open, even though they annoy me to no end.

Hmm. I've never heard of a vented hose, so I really can't advise about that. All of the hoses I've used or seen for sale are solid, no vent holes. Maybe one of our wise old timers here will chime in. I think you should use a regular, non-vented hose with your vented mask, though.

I forgot to mention that I also get o2 through the base that goes into the hose. I have a 6 foot hose and attached to the end of the 6 foot hose is a 6 inch blue hose with a round exhaust vent in the middle and the end is attached to the mask.

What was your previous mask?

There are some special nonvented ones for use with centrals. Was it one of those?

Mirage NV FullFace S2 - ResMed (assuming the NV meant NonVenting).

Then why did you get a vented mask this time? Don't you have to use a NV mask? Perhaps you need to call your doctor on this.

Most of us use vented masks but there are a few people around here (Lubman is the person I think of first) who use NV masks.

This is all on me, I had a spare mask which I never used, and my old mask was a non-vented one which has seen better days - especially after I just shaved. I pulled out the new mask and tried it last night. I plugged up the holes and slept well last night. I have another NV mask on order and it should arrive before the end of the week.

Sorry, I didn't mean to make a big deal out of it. Sorry if I concerned anyone. Like I said, I knew that I use a non-venting mask.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

no problem here

many people here are not even aware non-vented masks exist

I wasn't aware they needed special hose adapters so we hopefully all learned something from your post

I am sure that you have read on here many times,,, it is dangerous to "plug up the holes"....can you not try it as is until the new one comes to you?

There need to be proper venting I agree. He needs his special short hose to do that.

As I said before, most of us use vented masks and only know vented masks. He needs to consult his doctor before using anything but his prescribed "circuit" with a NV mask, O2, and special vented hose adapter.

I talked to my Dr. this AM and he said that I shouldn't have any problem with making the mask a nv mask as the internal size is very similar to my old mask and my inline venting will compensate just fine, especially for a few nights till my new mask comes in.

I do appreciate the concern - as I have read all about blocking holes here, but was not concerned and now am relieved even more by the doctor.

In the CPAP world I am a very weird, very special case I guess. It is also true I have not read very many posts from non venting mask people.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear you talked to your doctor about this.
