O T tinnitus

Post by deerslayer » Mon Apr 07, 2008 7:57 am

just saw a story on abc about tinnitus . so i sat up in my chair thinking they were going to actually say something worth while on the subject (wrong) anyway it did leed me to a web page http://www.ata.org that i was not aware of that may possibly leed to something in the future. being exposed to mucho gunfire long ago , i have lived with this high pitched ringing for years....the wife says i have good hearing( but selective) .she has no idea.there is a sound link on the site that actually is what mine is like. maybe some day there will be a solution. like O S D , tinnitus is another little known condition .

Hi Deerslayer,
I have had tinnitus in the past, after a bout with the flu. I was also on antibiotics for over 2 months.....so who knows what really caused it.
Lately I've had pulsitile tinnitus.
Back when I first developed it the worst stuff, I read where you can have your ears sort of reprogrammed to listen to other "noises" instead. Have you ever heard about that or considered going through that retraining? I didn't read your link..........and maybe that's what it was about. Surely they can figure out some help for those of us going crazy with these sounds.

Ya know, every time someone brings up tinnitus, I get this ringing sound in my ears ..., seriously. Only occasionally do I ordinarily notice it though. I've had bi-lateral high-frequency hearing loss at least since I was small. First time I was tested by an audiologist, she even accused me of being a lip-reader, said I couldn't possibly understand conversation otherwise ... I'm not a lip-reader though and she proved that with a "comprehension test".

Anyway, my point is that people adapt to adversity all the time. Training oneself to ignore tinnitus seems reasonable to me. I ignore it. Of course, I have no idea how one would go about consciously training oneself to do so. Likewise, neither do I know how to get the ringing out of my ears now ... I'm pretty sure it'll pass though.

Regards,
Bill

Mine goes away temporarily when I blast the stereo and play along with my Gibson SG
President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.

I've had tinnitus since an automobile accident where both eardrums burst when I was 16. Mine sounds like the roar of the ocean and much of the time I'm not even aware of it. Every doctor I have mentioned this to has said it was not a result of the burst eardrums. Since it started after the accident, I believe this is another example of the ignorance of know-it-all doctors. Oh, well.............

I've had tinnitus for many years. It always bothers me when it's quiet, especially when I'm ready to sleep. For years I've played music at bedtime.

The "white noise" of the CPAP is an acceptable substitute for the music.

That is SO FUNNY! I attribute my tinnitus to my late husband's Gibson Les Paul! Well, more particularly, the Marshall stacks. And, in all fairness, it probably was actually caused by that time I decided to LAY ON TOP OF the Marshall stack at a Ted Nugent concert in the early 80's... Hey, what happens in Wichita STAYS in Wichita!

My Dad has it too. Years of working with heavy machinery. He's a freak for hearing protection for all the guys in our family. He's been known to give expensive ear muffs as gifts.

I've been told - particularly since his most recent and severe hearing loss - that like male pattern baldness, it is common for the males of our species to lose the higher pitch frequencies in their hearing as they get older. Coincidentally, that is the pitch most females talk in...

I think it's just NATURAL DEFENSE. I suspect many an old geezer would agree with me.

Dad's is way more severe than mine is. To the point where he couldn't pickup normal conversation in a loud ambient environment. Of course now with the Cochlear Implant, he just turns the whole thing off once we leave the car and I pretty much talk to him with hand gestures: "Wanna 'nother beer?" "I'm going to wash my hands," that sort of thing.

LOL,
Babs

had studied up on that back in 2000, there were many theories abound but no real solutions, people that have had strokes sometimes develop that, heard it can be very annoying with no real relief if you have it.

Some people develop a hypersensitivity and can sometimes hear the blood run their their arteries, not so far fetched when you realize you have some major arteries running close to the ear canal at the back of the ear. Then other research indicated it was more a nerve thing and that sometimes supplements taken to desensitize nerves of the brain would help (vitamin C, D & B and folate). Then other research indicated acupuncture may even help. How's your hypertension? I know Dr. Breus was doing some research study on tinnitus back when I was studying it, you might give him a shout on WebMD and see if he ever came up with anything on it, he will respond to you even though he's a big shot now.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Yup, I've got OSD and tinnitus. The ear ringing is from too many years around race cars and motorcycles, plus the noise at work. I'm lucky, the only time I really notice it is when I'm in a quiet enviroment. This makes getting to sleep difficult at times, usually when I'm away from home, as I need a TV or radio on when I fall asleep, otherwise I tend to think about things, which takes my mind off the noise, but I don't fall asleep. My CPAP machine does provide a "white noise" which tends to improve the situation.

I fear for the next generation. When I had my hearing tested, I had a long talk with the doc who expressed concern for all these kids with the "bumpin' car stereos", for tinnitus is a condition which develops over years of hearing abuse. They're young and think everything heals, however he sees 20-somethings now with hearing damage he normally sees in 60-70 year-olds. Warn your kids! Protect yourself! There's no cure for tinnitus. It's with you forever...
