Sessions and AHI

Post by REK » Mon Mar 17, 2008 5:23 pm

Just got my new REMstar Pro CPAP w/humidifier. My questions are:
I have used it five nights, four of them all night long, last night I woke after four hours unable to go back to sleep. I got up and read for about an hour and went back to bed and slept for another 3 hours. The machine has only given me credit for 4 sessions. Did the break between my sleep last night cause it not to count last night as a sleep session?

Although I have only used the machine for 5 nights it tells me that my 7 day and 30 day AHI is 1.0. I realize that is a good number but does that mean 1 per hour, 1 per session, or only 1 for the 4 sessions I have used the machine?

Any help figuring this out would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I believe you need 4 consecutive hours to be considered a session, so if your first session last night was actually 3:59, it wouldn't count.

AHI stands for Apnea Hypopnea Index, so this is the number of events per hour. Anything under 5 is OK, 1 is very good.

Do you know what your AHI was on your sleep study? If you do, compare the two numbers to see how much benefit you're getting from CPAP.

You probably don't have software, do you?

By default, the minimum number of hours for compliance is 4.
A "compliance day" runs from noon on one day to the following noon.
If you have more than a 1-hour break between sleep periods, it will break those up into separate sessions, but would still show the total hours for the "compliance day" in the sleep therapy reports in Encore.
Also, pulling one's card out of the machine will also cause a break in the reports.
