The best way to keep your mask on

Post by zoolander » Mon Mar 10, 2008 5:35 pm

I have asked the question in another thread on 2 different forums. I'm fairly new to using CPAP and my worst problem so far is keeping the mask on. Slowly but surely I am getting better at it and have had a few suggestions on how to keep my mask on.

here are some of the suggestions so far
1. Mittons on the hands
2. Tape the mask to the face
3. Stocking over the head
4. setting the alarm on the CPAP to wake me up if the mask comes off

What are peoples thoughts on this? Has anyone tried any of the above?

Does anyone else have any other suggestions about techniques that have worked well for them when trying to keep their masks on

When I first started, I removed my mask during sleep, just a reflex. Told my doc, he said that's normal for some people when starting. After a few weeks of that happening on some nights, I stopped taking it off. I never tried any of those techniques you mentioned.

Zoolander - the one thing your profile doesn't show is what kind of mask you're using, and tips for holding it on might depend on that info...

Nailgun, maybe? Took me 4 months before I'd leave it on all night. And still every now and then I wake up without a mask on.

Ultra Full Face. I chose the ultra because the silicon seal is a lot stronger than the mirage quattro. I think they may have change the seal over on the ultra because it's a lot softer than the ultra full face mask I used during my CPAP trial

You've asked on this forum too, and you'll never know what works best for you till you try.

If you tape ... try duck tape.

If your not a duck tape kind'a person, there is always self-hypnosis (affirmation/visualization) type techniques.

Have a long talk with your sub-conscious.......it's in charge while you're asleep....and be sure it knows that you're gonna die if it keeps defeating your therapy.

Once your sub-conscious is in favor of the project, the mask will stay on.
