Total Face Mask

Post by HelpMeBreath » Mon Mar 03, 2008 7:15 am

I have been using the search feature but in my haste I have not seen a post specifically talking about the respironics total face mask. I am on my third mask now, swift II to the Hybrid and I am dealing with annoying leaks, and when i try to fix them it only makes it worse. I am on an hour sleep right now and it sucks, I tried to sleep without ambien last night and was still awake each time the ramp up was finished so I would have to reset the machine over and over, finally I decided I needed at least an hour of bad sleep over no sleep and I actually threw the mask in disgust, I hope I didnt break it, ANYWAY, I am up in the air about trying a cpap sleeping pillow, or a new mask, I dont know what to do, I was doing well for a couple days after DSM talked me through some settings but its getting worse again and Im back where I started.

I am looking at the total face mask, aside from looking like an astronaut sticking his head in a toilet, I am wondering if these have been effective. I tried the swift again the other night but the pressure is so high, it pops my ears. I cant just go buying mask after mask out of pocket. Has anyone had any experience with this mask?

I am also looking through the forum for methods to stop leaks, but as Im sure you know, trying to do anything when youre so tired and facing a huge day at work is really frustrating and seemingly futile.

Hi I just just recentely started using a full face mask and it works really well for me. I must have 7 or 8 mask in my closet. I have tried everything from bravo to resmed and of all of those the resmed marage activa is my favorite but because i started breathing with my mouth open i had to change to the full face mask. I don't even use the ramp feature on mine comes on at 14 and stays there but everyone is different.
Good luck on your search......[/img]

I have tried the total face mask. It is one size fits all, and as you well know, one size does NOT fit all. It was huge and there was no way it was going to fit my face. Maybe if one had a big round face and were unable to move during the night, it might work, but for most people there is no way. I wish they would make different sizes, as I think the possibilities are there.See if you can try one at your DME. It will only take a minute or two to see that it won't work.

Hello again. I know its different for everyone, but the more I have read about the activa, it looks appealing. This hybrid is leaking but it doesnt start off leaking, so that makes me wonder if I am bumping it in the night time. I am a back sleeper and really need to break that habit, as I said the problem is the slightest thing wakes me up and when it does I can RARELY go back to sleep without resetting the machine.

As far as the pressure goes, I use a VPAP III and the settings are 18/12 I believe. This might change as I was at 19/10 , with an AI of 40 after using the machine for two months. DSM told me how to make some changes and now I am down to 1.9 or so. My AHI is rising again however.

Anyway, back to the mask. The FF mask that I was given (charged for) at my sleep study, I really dont know the name of it, but the problem is that he told me the large was too big but the medium feels too small, it pinches my nose off slightly and I need to be able to breath through my nose, even though I am a mouth breather after I fall asleep. If I move the mask higher it barely comes below my bottom lip. I have tried it twice and I make it an hour before removing it. The hybrid has been the most comfortable so far, it doesnt blow my cheeks up and I like the feeling of breathing through my nose. Maybe I am picky but I feel like i have made so many adjustments to accommodate this whining box, that I want to get some relief.

Short story long. I think I will try the activa.

re: the total face mask, it just looks really impractical and uncomfortable. I am reading about this surgery where they put hooks in your jaw and tether your tongue to it, sounds like the spanish inquisition and 2 months ago I would have said "No WAY!"..but now it sounds kind of appealing.

Re: DME.. No dice. I dont have one. The place that I picked up my VPAP machine is too far from me, and expensive, they are obviously used to gouging insurance companies. I had to really push it to get them to come close the online price I could get the machine for.
