I did it! 10k hours!

Post by WindFlyer » Fri Feb 22, 2008 11:33 am

Last night I hit the 10,000 hour mark on my machine! I have been 100% compliant since June of '04! My daily energy levels are normal, BP is 120/80, and I KNOW I'm going to dodge a heart attack or other serious health issue because of my CPAP. ONWARD! ONWARD! Mask breathers unite!

Far out -- Congratulations!!!! And thanks for sharing!!!!

I guess I'll have to check my machine one of these days to see how many hours I've got -- with the exception of one night (when there was no power and I had no battery backup, a situation that has been rectified!!!) I've been 100% compliant since June 5 2007.....

Yay for success stories!!!!

cheers

What is the consensus on "compliant".
I have nights when I manage >4 hrs on cpap and Encore Pro has nice green graphs and says I'm compliant. Other nights I have trouble and only get <3hrs 59mins and all the graphs are red.
I DON'T think that 4 hours per night is very good but feel better as there are gradually more green days (over 3 months). However as I'm still needing a nap and still feel tired (but less than before cpap) one could say I'm 'compliant'

So what do you all think? - I think 6-8hrs is more like a success story for myself to aim for.
Thanks, Michael

Michael

michaelho, you can always set higher hours on Encore Pro. Go to preferences, "Set Minimum Therapy Time" to 6, 7 or 8 hours. In my mind being compliant is just a rough measurement of sleeping hours. Anybody on CPAP can stay awake for the whole night and let the CPAP record as sleeping hours.

A normal person sleeping hours is about 8 hours whether he/she have OSA or not. You should aim for longer hours and also sleep early. I can feel tiredness if sleeping hours is less than 6 hours.

compliance?

Post by lifeartist59 » Sat Feb 23, 2008 4:27 pm

I have read several articles on what is considered complaint use of cpap. One study suggests ( I believe it is the respiratory therapist association or similar group) that compliance be defined as >4 hours a night, 70% of nights used. I also read a mention that medicare/caide considers regular use to be >2.5 hours a night with symptomatic relief. I have been aiming for as long as possible, especially to get over 4 hrs a night. Some nights I can not fall asleep at all with it, others I am fine. Anyone else read or hear anything?

It's my understanding that most insurance companies that check consider 4 or more hours per night to be compliant. I don't know about the 70% of the time....
It's never been an issue for me as I have been sleeping 8-10 hours a night since I got on the machine.....with the exception of one.

I would think that doing the best you can would be good...strive for improvement, but do the best you can......

cheers

Congrats on your "mileage" reading. From your avatar and your machine, it seems like you're a WindFlyer in more ways than one.

About nightly hours of usage, my last office visit my hours were about 3.5 to 5 with wakeups, and the doc told me this wasn't enough to reap the cardiovascular benefits of cpap. Have gotten up to an average of over 7 hours per nite. Still fall asleep during the day, but I feel better knowing I'm doing better for my heart.
