Hose WAshing

Post by jomac30 » Sun Feb 10, 2008 6:59 pm

After reading how often everyone washes their mask, I was wondering how often everyone washes and disinfects their hose. When I first started cpap I washed and disinfected my hose every week. Now every few months. Is that normal or disgusting? I never felt I could really get into the middle part of the hose anyway so what's the difference?

I see no reason to wash the hose at all. It only carries filtered air and moisture from distilled water. You will probably do more damage washing it than just leave it alone. Thats my take on the issue. Regards jim

I suspect that the outside of the hose is more likely to need washing than the inside.

I rinse mine with mildly soapy water once a week, when I wash my mask. I just pour in a couple of cups of liquid, and hold my hands over each end, and swish it back and forth a bit, then rinse.

Just take it in the shower with you when you think about it. Makes less of a mess & Cleans both sides. I just let mine drip dry.

The inside of the hose is warm and moist. I use soapy water and a hose cleaning brush that fits inside (basically a nylon brush on a long wire) to just give it a little scrubbing, just to ensure a layer of crud doesn't build up. See here: http://www.cpapplus.com/CPAP_Cleaning/T ... Brush.html

When I first got my stuff, I washed everything a lot.

How exhausting. Now I go months in between cleanings.

I run my hose dry every morning.
It NEVER dried completely otherwise.

I figured drying the hose in my busy bathroom would introduce way more germs to the hose.

Like the sunrise, this topic will come up with great regularity.

Someone will ask the same question and all the answers will be of two types.

1- those who repeat the soap/water, vinegar/water, all sorts of ways to dry the hose, all the several rituals started by their dme.
These people are great followers and simply regurgitate rituals without ever asking if such is needed in the first place.

2- Those who simply clean it in some fashion every several months just as they would clean anything else in their home.

They do not ask if sterilizing it is necessary, they just assume it is and develop their rituals. They ignore the mfgs directions for CLEANING their stuff and never ask why it is not necessary to STERILIZE it.

I am in the latter group and ignore mine until bugs start growing out of my pillows and start crawling up my nose
Nothing happens to me or those who do the same.

This will not the next person from coming in and asking it again and it starts over again just like the sunrise.
Some People are very predictable.

Some people are not predictable.

Yes indeed, people are predictable.

Every time this topic arises, tomjax responds as above, giving his predictable message.

It is nice to know you can count on some things.

Thanks, tomjax.

Den (have never washed my CPAP hose.....going on 3 years.....and there ain't no bugs on me)

There Ain't No Bugs On Me
Lyrics: Traditional
Music: Traditional

Played live once by Jerry with David Grisman, and recorded on "Not For Kids Only"

Chorus 1
Oh there ain't no bugs on me
There ain't no bugs on me
There may be bugs on some of you mugs
But there ain't no bugs on me

Well, the Juney bug comes in the month of June
The lightning bug comes in May
Bed bug comes just any old time
But, they're not going to stay

Chorus 2
Oh there ain't no bugs on me
There ain't no bugs on me
There may be bugs on the rest of you mugs
But there ain't no bugs on me

Well, a bull frog sittin' on a lily pad
Looking up at the sky
The lily pad broke and the frog fell in
He got water all in his eye...ball

[chorus 1]

[Spoken: "Get away from me you horse fly"]

Mosquito he fly high
Mosquito he fly low
If old mosquito lands on me
He ain't a gonna fly no mo'

[chorus 2]

A peanut sittin' on a railroad track
His heart was all a flutter
Along come a choo-choo on the track
Toot! Toot! Peanut butter!

[chorus 1]

Well little bugs have littler bugs
Up on their backs to bite 'em
And the littler bugs have still littler bugs
And so ad infinitum

[chorus 2]

As I went walking through the woods
Humming a tune so gaily
The wind come whistling through the trees
And froze my ukelele

[chorus 1]

Oh there ain't no flies on me
There ain't no flies on me
There may be flies on some of you guys
But there ain't no flies on me

Oh there ain't no lobsters on me
There, ain't no lobsters on me
There may be lobsters on some of you mobsters
But there ain't no lobsters on me

Oh it ain't gonna rain no more no more
It ain't gonna rain no more
How in the heck can I wash my neck
When it ain't gonna rain no more?

Oh it ain't gonna rain no more, no more
It ain't gonna rain no more
How in the hell can the old folks tell
If it ain't gonna rain no more?
