Tiredness Returns--Suggestions?

Post by sleepyguy1 » Sun Feb 10, 2008 8:51 am

I have been using a sleep apnea cpap for 1 1/2 years and it has worked fine. However the last two months my sleepiness has returned, like it is not working correctly.

I have a Resmed S7 and Resmed S8. I keep one at home and the other for traveling, and it is be the same on both. I sleep enough hours but often wake up feeling sleepy and tired, like I only slept half the night. Any suggestions?

Also, I noticed on the forum that people talk about their leak data etc. Is that something I can and should check on mine? I was unaware you could do that.

Thanks.

There could be many reasons for this. Have you changed masks? Is your mask due to be replaced? Have you gained/loss a large amount of weight? Do you have more stress in your life? Does your pillow/mattress need to be replaced?
As for leak data; yeah, that is something you need to know. If you are having alot of leaking you aren't getting proper therapy. If your mask is old it may leak more. If you try a new mask it may take time to get it tweaked for the best fit.

Brenda, Thanks.

One one machine is my old mask, and on the other is a new one, but the same mask.

I have gained about 16 pounds--does that make a difference?

How do you read info about leaks, AHI etc. I was not aware you could do that.
Is there a code you press into the machine?

Thanks again.

Please fill out your profile with the equipment you use, including the pressure and other settings configured in your machines. There's room for more details in the "Additional Comments" section.

If you're using a nasal mask, you may be leaking therapy air out your mouth.

Den, thanks.

I use a Resmed Mirage Swift nasal pillow.

How do you figure out the "pressure and other settings configured in your machines". It was prescribed by a doctor and all of that was put in before I got it. I think my prescription had the pressure on it, but how do you find out the rest--the pressure was all I remember seeing.

Thanks.

Which ResMed machines do you have? (which specific models?)

You can go to this website and download the manuals for the Compact and Escape. The Compact and Escape are non-data-capable machines, but the Elite and Vantage models give lots of nightly details in the LCD screens.

Thanks. I just put the info in my profile about my machine and mask. I have the S8 Compact so I guess I do not have the data available.

You still haven't told us what your pressure is......

However, assuming that the therapy pressure is sufficient, I'd think that mouth-leaking may be your issue. Do you wake up with a dry mouth? If so, you have a few choices......Tape your mouth shut, use Polident adhesive denture strips to seal your lips.....or, get a full face mask.....to make sure.

Yes, if thats your unit then unfortunately you are chasing your tail somewhat. There are many possibilities. Weight gain can contribute to it, leakage can contribute to it. Without a data capable machine, it is certainly more difficult to run down these issues.

Listen to the "Vets" around here, they really have a great sense and feel for these things.

Would weight gain of 16 pounds make a difference in the pressure setting?

Would allergies and sinus drainage make a difference in leakage or pressure?

It certainly can.

Again, the answer is yes.

It's also possible that inadequate therapy COULD cause weight gain. For many people, Obstructive Sleep Apnea may may have been the cause of their weight gain to begin with. In other words, one may cause the other and then they continue to contribute to or escalate the problem.

Thanks again for the very helpful information.

So, if I buy the Resmed S8 Elite, you get feedback on the screen such that you can adjust your settings. Is that correct?

Where is the best place to buy CPAP's?
