Gastric Bypass and Aerophagia

Post by lawdognellie » Wed Jan 23, 2008 2:51 am

Well, the date is finally set for my gastric bypass - March 3 (which is 4 days after I finish taking the bar exam, argh). Am excited and worried of course. A thought just occurred to me, and I was hoping fellow pap users who've had bypass may have some insight. Admittedly, I am on major brain overload, so it may be a totally rediculous question. I always wake up in the morning with a belly full of air. What happens when you lose most of your stomach? Will the air post-op cause the stitches or whatever to rip? That would totally blow (pun intended). Anyone have any thoughts? Okay, back to studying.

I thought I read somebody's post who said they weren't allowed to use their xPAP for xx amount of time after gastric bypass or lapband surgery but I can't swear to that.

Have you talked to your sleep doctor about the aerophagia and possible remedies for it? Have you read any of the "remedies" for it that others in the forum who have experienced it found to work? Its seems to me (and again I can't swear to it) that having to go to a bi-level was one of the "cures" for aerophagia.

According to Kaiser, I'm supposed to bring my PAP with me the day of surgery. Also, I'm already on biPAP and it's no help for the swallowing air. Nothing so far has helped prevent it.

I had my gastric bypass on Dec.6. I was being the good compliant girl and used my CPAP the first night. Woke up the next morning...was as bloated as heck and felt HORRIBLE. My PCP(pulmonologist) visited me that morning(as a friend...he doesn't have privileges where I had surgery)and I asked him if my CPAP could be the cause...I'm on a pressure of 15 and was now worried that I had messed up my new pouch. He decided that I shouldn't use my CPAP for a week. Good idea!!! I felt a lot better the next time I used it a week later. Now my surgeon never said anything about not using my CPAP but like I said I just felt so HORRIBLE. If you have any questions about what to expect after surgery don't hesitate to pm me. Hey...I'll see you over on the losers bench soon!!!!

Bumping this thread for more info. Lawdognellie, what was your experience post-surgery?

I'm having some serious problems with aerophagia and I'm set to have gastric bypass sometime in November. I'm really concerned about air in the pouch, but I'm also worried about not getting decent sleep after surgery - without rest healing times are much greater.
