Before treatment it wasn't the sleepiness that bothered me so much. What really bothered me was a feeling of mental fogginess, like I was drugged. I'm curious how many others felt this way.

yes i think the fogginess with lethargy and difficulty with thinking/reasoning was worse for me than sleepiness. Sleepiness would hit me mid afternoon, so mainly once a day where the other was all the time. I finally began to realize i was getting foggier and less productive all the time.... I'm only on my 3rd week, but I believe i've turned the corner and have had a couple productive days YAY!!

I was always sooooo sleepy. I didn't feel in a fog that much although my kids said I acted more like a zombie. I thought that the sleepiness and accompanying insomnia and fatigue were just a part of menopause stuff until my sister and I went on a trip and shared a room. She woke me up in the middle of the night and told me I had sleep apnea extremely bad and that there was help available and to go get a sleep study done. It's been a bumpy road but I'm certainly in better shape now than I was this time last year.

I was more "sleepy" before cpap. I'd get very drowsy while driving. Pulled over on many a trip to take a nap. The only fogginess was being groggy upon awakening in the mornings. Never felt like I'd had enough sleep, and wondered how anyone could possibly be a "morning person." I was ok after an hour or so of being up and about.
That all changed dramatically for the good after my first night on cpap.

If you had asked me pre-treatment, I would have said sleepiness. I have been surprised to find out that I am clearly more alert now, but still somewhat sleepy. I would say that my problem was two-fold: quality and quantity. The CPAP has definitely improved the quality of my sleep, but I still don't get enough hours.

I never felt foggy, but awoke each morning feeling so tired, like I'd been climbing a mountain all night. I'd start the day slow, but by an hour or so after arising, I'd get myself into gear. Then about 2 p.m. I would need a nap, and if I didn't get it, I'd have trouble holding my eyes open the rest of the day.

I vote sleepy but I really cannot simplify it like this. My symptoms were/are many fold. I flat could not sleep at night. Then I would want to nap all day. I was irritable, grouchy, depressed, was also in the fog, impaired ability to reason and almost no short term memory. Had many other health problems that SA embelished. I drive a great deal in work, had a tremendous hard time staying awake, woould have to consume copious amounts of caffeine thus worsening my lack of sleep. I was just a mess. This treatment has helped tremendously though still have some problems. I still fade in the afternoon but not as bad. Have lost most of the depression, less grumpy (most of the time) And keep getting better. I had a huge deprement and it's taking a long time to improve, but I am.

I agree and I suspect most of us experienced many complex issues. Maybe better wording would be did one or the other aspect impact your life more, or possibly were you aware of one or the other more. It might also be good to add a 3rd option for those who felt both had equal or close to equal impact to their lives.rock and roll wrote:I vote sleepy but I really cannot simplify it like this. Rock how long have you been on therapy? This is just the end of my 3rd week. I'm beginning to feel the fog lift. Some days I actually have some energy but I notice it burns out quickly still. Each day I wake feeling a little better but it definitely is a gradual thing.

Hey there... Long time no see! I actually felt more sleepy! I would seem to fall asleep behind the wheel or at my desk..... I thought maybe it was because I didn't get a full night's sleep since I fell asleep on the couch watching "Everybody Loves Raymond" or something. Turns out that wasn't it! But now, even though it's been 3 months on cpap..... I still find myself alittle sleepy at times. Is this normal? I have been getting 6 - 10 hours of cpap treatment nightly (differs depending on what day of the week it is).... so, is it normal to still feel sleepy???? When will this feeling go away and I feel normal again?

definately foggy for me< I do feel like I've been run over by a bulldozer everyday!!! but the foginess is what is most bothersome to me. 70 hours logged on my latest cpap (respironics pro2) and no relief insight grrrrrrrrr..... It is definately frustrating....... but we'll keep trying... no problems keeping the mask on now it just doesn't seem to give the relief I was hoping for.....grrrrrrrrrr......But daytime sleepiness has never been an issue for me no matter if I sleep 8 hours or an hour once I'm up I'm up for the day... I just don't have the focus and concentration that I'd like to have back......grrrrrrrrrrr......
AND I USED TO THINK SLEEP WAS OVER RATED!!!!

Iwanna.
I have been doing CPAP for 10 months now. The difference has been night and day and I first noticed I was improving after the first month, after three months my energy returned and my depression waned. After six months my health has improved tremendously. I still fade in the afternoon and wake up sluggish, but I am a firm believer and just wish I had been diagnosed and started thearapy much sooner. Everybody must give it time, it took years to get in our mess and it takes at least a year to get out of it. This is not an overnight cure. But it does turn the corner for us after about two-six weeks.

I vote for alertness!!!!
Although sleepy at times, my problem was that I wasn't alert....I couldn't concentrate.
Even now, nearly 2 months in, I still have some trouble going to sleep....but once I am asleep, the quality is wonderful.
I didn't know, until my sleep study, that most people don't wake up with a head ache!!! Sleep....wonderful sleep.....personally, I would love a cure for insomnia!!!
