Do men wake up alot, or is that a woman thing??

Post by Country4ever » Fri Jan 18, 2008 11:54 am

Hi all,
I was just curious if there are many men out there who wake up several times during the night? I'm thinking its more of a woman thing. I've talked to lots of women who started waking up alot at night, once perimenopause started.
I'm thinking that primitive man had to sleep very soundly, from searching so hard for that wooley mammoth for dinner, and was exhausted at night. I think the female brain is wired to be vigilant all the time, in case a lion or other foe comes near the cave at night. That's my theory about why women might wake up more often at night.
But there does seem to be some female hormone component that makes it much worse once we start losing our estrogen.
My husband and son can sleep soundly for 12 hours. I'm so envious!!

Well I have not hunted any Woolys lately but some women on this forum tell me that I wake up frequently at night because I am aware that I dream each night. Who knows, maybe they are right but I don't always remember waking up out of my dreams cuz I like them so much

I have never experienced the perimenopause thing and hope not to.

The only male forum member I know of that sleeps in a cave is Jim (Goofproof) but you would have to ask him about his Wooly adventures and feline cave intruders.

I sleep lightly, not because of me chasing the Wolly all day, it's to be aware of Wolly chasing me at night. I need a bigger door rock for my cave. Jim

My husband seldom even moves and definitely doesn't wake up alot but I wake up frequently!
I don't have a problem going to sleep now but I wake up and turn over often.
However my husband still does do a lot of mammoth hunting because he does have a very physical job.

Nope!.......there IS another one......
And, I KNOW he ain't gonna talk about his "adventures".

Back to the subject at hand.....

I don't think the "waking during the nights" is necessarily confined to women.
For those of us who have aches and pains (back and knees), turning from side to side during the night is just "normal". Then there's that THING that's strapped to our faces that occasionally needs some attention or the hose needs to be untangled from the covers...... AND, depending on how many hours it's been.....a potty trip makes the rest of the night more restful. How many more examples do you need?

At my house, It's my wife who sleeps soundly and I (husband, male-type carbon based life form) am the one who has trouble falling asleep, wakes up easily and am up many times a night.

xPAP has reduced my AHI at night, but I am stuggling with getting to sleep and staying that way.

I am reading the 'Sound Sleep, Sound Mind' book by Barry Krakow, MD to help me with this. It's hard to break the "brain won't turn off" habit as I have been doing it seince I was about 5 years old (42 years ago).

Marc...

yeah i'm one that has to wake up for a few seconds and find another comfortable position over and over again at night, bed is too soft for my liking and causes everything to hurt after laying a couple hours in one position, while my wife seems to be the one who sleeps rather soundly, lol, i think i end up waking her up every now and then with my relentless tossing around..
