Loratidine/Claritin

Post by Kenv » Wed Jan 16, 2008 7:37 pm

Has anyone been on Loratidine (Claritin) for an extended period of time?
I'm just wondering if its safe for long term use.
Thanks
Ken

Claritin doesn't do anything for my allergies and so have not taken it for extended periods of time.

Zyrtec is coming over the counter and can tell you that I have been taking it daily without fail for the last 8 years as a prescription drug.

I have taken antihistimines regularly for the last 40 years (since I was in grade school) due to severe allergies. I usually build a resistance to them and have to change off to something else. Yet Zyrtec has not built up a resistance to it.

I used the Claritan D for several (probably 8 - 10) years before it became an over the counter drug. Then switched to Allegra D and it was not nearly as effective. I was about to try Zyrtec about 6 months ago when my doctor told me I shouldn't be taking the "D" part. So I tried the "plain" Claritan over the counter and have been using it every day since.

Prior to using Claritan (the D version) I was having quite a major problem with sinus headaches and frequent infections. I don't think I've had one true sinus headache and I know I haven't had a sinus infection since. I don't know of any adverse side effects. Hope this is helpful information.

Thanks very much for that information Linda. I have had Loratidine/Claritin before with it helping only slightly but I am experimenting with Loratidine and Vitamin C nasal spray together. The results so far are very encouraging - I will make another post here when I get through trialling it.
Thanks again.

Yes. I've used it pretty consistently since 1998. I find it's really been a god-send. I don't notice any side effects. I prefer to take it straight - and only use the pseudoephedrine on it's own, as needed.

Previous to this - I used straight Chlorepheneramine Maleate (sp?) daily from about 1984 to 1998. Yup, I'm a Phlegm Monster. Gotta keep that runny nose at bay somehow.

The 40 pound weight gain during that time is directly attributable to my sit-down job and not the Claritin.

My sex drive appears to be about the same - it's there, he's not.

No animals have been killed or injured during this time. Other than the one's I didn't actually personally kill but bought at Safeway in pre-killed form.

LOL,

I've used Loratadine (generic, from Sam's Club -- about 5 cents a pill) for the past 4-5 years or so with no side effects that I can see.

I can still notice the difference when I'm using it and when I'm not. For me, it is just enough to keep me off chronic bronchitis. When it gets tough, during serious allergy times, I add sudafed or a cold medicine like the stuff in Alka-Seltzer cold tabs (day and night), which I also purchase generic for low cost.
