Neti Wash

Post by jsmythe » Mon Jan 14, 2008 10:16 am

Has any one used the Neti Wash that you can get from the Neti Pot web site? It sounds like it would work wonders on an irritated and inflamed nasal passage. I would love to hear everyones comments on this product.
I almost ordered it but hesitated because I was not sure it would do what I wanted it to.
I also use Ayr gel and love it, I tried to use Ponaris, made me so very sick at my stomach, could not use it. Worked great, but it is just not for me.

Incidentally, this is the web site that I was referring to:

Hi Joyce,

I just stick with salt or salt and baking soda solution. I've done a check on mayoclinic web site and they seem to prefer that also. I don't know about the other options they have but my personal preference is to keep it simple. I was using netipot but have gone to NeilMed Sinus rinse system (salt and baking power and an easy-to-use squeeze bottle). It's very quick and easy ... no muss, no fuss. It enables me to use a nasal mask in the winter. I think it was Snoredog who also posted the proportions for a homemade nasal rinse.

Thanks Mindy! After doing a search I found several articles, Thank you Snoredog! I have mixed it and getting ready to use it.. much cheaper than my NeilMed... Maybe I will be able to get to the place where I dont have to use any sprays to keep my nasal passages open... , hopefully.

Isn't it easier just to use a full face mask? I'm really happy with mine and I don't have to worry about nasal conjestion anymore!

It would be nice to use a full face mask, but as this site clearly shows, it's not for everybody. I tried a FF mask, and my cheeks blew up like a chipmunk storing watermellons for the winter. It was uncomfortable, and I had a heck of a time sleeping on my side. The few minutes it takes to shoot a water canon up my nose and gross my kids out when I do it is:
1) well worth the laughs at their expressions watching niagra falls out my face
2) worth the comfort of sleeping with a nasal pillow

I needed it with my FFM! One night I woke up in a panic, unable to breathe ... once I used nasal rinse, it cleared right up.

I use the sea salt and warm water in a squeeze bulb approach and only throw in the baking soda when I have a rare cold. I keep it REALLY simple, but effective.

A Full Face mask is a patch job on getting CPAP to work and even that only is effective for SOME people. Back when I used a mask, a full face mask made my oxygen deprivation WORSE, doing some weird thing to shut off my airway. I didn't get CPAP working at all until I got my nose/sinuses fixed and started doing the nasal rinses regularly.

Lets face it, the sinus rinse, especially if you make your own complex solution (water and salt, how hard IS that?), is the cheapest and easiest part of your apnea treatment bar none. At least worth an experiment!

neti wash

Post by zoeybd » Mon Jan 14, 2008 6:56 pm

Hi,
I bought a neti pot at Albertsons that came with about 20 little packets of what I think you are talking about. I haven't tried to buy any separate. It worked just fine for me and I love the feeling the neti pot use gives to the nose when your sinuses have been plugged.

I bought salt especially for use with a neti pot It isn't iodized salt like table salt is. I paid $6.95 for a jar. I've been using it for 6 months now, and I've only used half of the jar.

Gosh o mighty! How big is that jar of salt? I paid .49 cents today for a box of uniodized salt! Just a regular size. Expensize in AR....

It's a 10 oz. jar. You can't look at it the same way as table salt. It has medicinal purposes. $6.95 isn't expensive for medicine.

Iodine is a trace element we NEED. I have not found anyone with FACTS as to why you should worry about it in salt that goes in your nose.

On the other hand, your $.49 salt probably has ALUMINUM in it. Read the ingredients. I know its controversial, but I personally avoid consuming aluminum for cooking or up my nose.

That being said, for about $2 you can get PURE salt or salt that has a safer additive than aluminum for flow control(thats why they put in the aluminum silicate) I haven't worried about iodine additive and in fact prefer it for cooking, because most people need iodine unless you eat a lot of nori, but I did just find some absolutely PURE salt at my local Trader Joe's that dissolves fast too, although its a bit pricey at just over $2.

Sorry Treesap, I didnt realize there was salt available like what you bought. Thank you Snork1 for pointing this out to me. I just thought un-iodized salt was, well, just that...
Now I know why Snoredog recommended the sea salt to use for the mixture.
When I bought mine, I picked up a bottle of sea salt, then changed my mind and bought the regular plain salt instead. I think now I will go back and get the sea salt... and do it right... Thanks to you both for showing me the difference...

As far as iodized salt .... although the amount of iodine is probably too small to matter, do any of you remember how it felt to have iodine put on a cut or scrape!!! I don't want that stuff on my delicate nasal tissues.
