Nettie pot to the rescue
In hope other my benefit from my experiences as I have from so many at capa talk I would like to share the following.
I have been on a auto pap 3 years with many ups and downs. One of biggest problem was the fact I could not breathe through my nose. Basic nasal mask were impossible and I turned to nasal prong type and this work good for a while. I also followed the advice that a lot of the nasal problems could be solved by the rasing of humidity and I bought the Ausa hose. Only to find I did best with low humidity set on one or using only the pass over humidify. Then I found the Activa mask which did better along with the doctor recommended nasal spray Flonase, so far the best sleep I had found. Until I got cataracts. At first I did not relate the Flonase to the cataracts until I failed my driver test due to eye sight. Finding cataracts listed as a possible side effect of Flonase and research on cpap talk I move to the next phase. Without Flonase I when to a full face mask the Quattro and now think why did I not do this before. No more chin straps to fool with. BUT still found it hard to breathe through the nose. As a last resort I tried the Nettie Pot which I had tried several years ago but had not given it the time to really work. I found that there are two stages to using the Nettie Pot and I have had better results after I advanced to the second stage. And it did seem to get better after using the Nettie pot the second or third week.

I have slept better in the last month the I have for as long as I can remember.
Hope this may help some one as much as I has help me.

Hi Gil,
Thanks for that posting.

I have a question to you....when you use the neti-pot, does the water go in one nostril and flow out the other? That may be a stupid question, but from what I've heard others say, it sounds like they get a lot of mucus out.

I tried the pot several times, and finally gave it away. My problem with it seems to be that the water comes right back out the same nostril, no matter how far I tip my head. It's almost like it hits a wall, and comes right back out.

Even when I use a canned "Simply Saline" rinse it does the same thing.

I do have a deviated septum, wondering if that is what is blocking it. Or maybe I just don't understand how it's suppose to work???

I plan on talking it over with my ENT, as I currently have a sinus infection, but sounds like you have had good luck with it, so thought I'd ask you.

Thanks for any help!
Gail

It took a little practice

Post by Gil » Wed Jan 09, 2008 11:37 am

It took a little practice. I got a plastic bottle in a kit from bed bath and beyond also basically same thing at Walmart. With the plastic bottle it gives me a little pressure which I think help with the flow. Some of the research I did lead me to believe the bottle with the pressure effect was the best way to go. Also It does take a while to get the hang of it but yes the water come out the other side easily. After getting use to using it I also do what they call a stage 2 (after doing the side to side rinse )were I suck the salt water back and down my throat and the water comes out of the mouth and this seem to help the over all results. I do not seem to get any thing out of the nose at all and after I go to bed I can feel water draining down my throat some times. I also have a deviated septum. The link to the web sites give a lot of detail. For example I find to use salt and not baking soda as most mention but the one site written by a doctor did say the was the best way to go if the salt did not bother you.

I started out with a Nasline, a syringe with a nasal tip. I then got a Grossan device discussed in Gil's third link based on comments by forum members (NightHawkeye, Mile High Sleeper, Snoozin’Bluezzz, greyhound, and jskinner) and it has become a part of my life just like PAP treatment. A bit on the pricy side but very well worth it as I no longer suffer from sinus congestion !!

Thanks Gil, this sounds worth looking into. I am currently on flonase, but sure don't want to use it long since the side effect you mention. Thanks again!!!!

If you use it correctly it does. See the video demo at http://sinucleanse.com/why_video.htm#.
