Drool?

Post by sleepzzzme » Tue Jan 08, 2008 5:36 pm

Sorry for the unfortunate topic, but I'm having a problem. I am not breathing through my mouth thanks to the chin strap on my mask, but I am drooling. Normally, no problem...but the drool is gathering on the strap beside my mouth and my skin is getting red and flaky from being wet all night.

I tried to put cotton pads in between, but they ended up soaked as well and didn't solve the problem.

I'm open to any ideas!

Thanks.

I'd say it's an unfortunate problem rather than topic.

I also drooled for about the first week and then it seemed to go away on its own ... so although I do empathize, I'm afraid I don't have any solutions.

Since chin straps don't totally fix mouth breathing for some, you might want to look at some of the (numerous) threads about mouth leaks and possible solutions.

I drool in my ffm sometimes and it tickles since I can't wipe it right away

You might try taping your mouth shut to see if that helps.

I used to drool all of the time prior to starting PAP treatment. I'm no expert but there may be a relationship between drooling in your sleep and untreated apnea (or inadequate apnea treatment).

Having said that: How is your treatment going? What kind of AHI #s are you getting? ...Is your leak rate steady and representative of your mask CO2 vent rate? Are you monitoring treatment with software?

Drooling

Post by kteague » Fri Jan 11, 2008 12:39 pm

Well, all vanity aside, this subject relates to me in a backwards kind of way. I never had a problem with drooling, asleep or awake, But since I started using cpap consistently, I find that I drool, but it's when I'm awake. I was thnking maybe a med was to blame. For a while it was frequent, but now just occassional. I had to always have a tissue handy just in case.

As far as changes to meds, I've been taking less Mirapex, Prilosec, and the Glucosamine combo. Anyone experienced drooling associated with either of these meds?

Kathy

Like Dream Stalker, I drooled all the time prior to starting cpap. Since I started my therapy, it has completely stopped! So maybe it is a sign/symptom/side effect of untreated apnea.

I did take Mirapex. It is a fantastic drug for most, but it caused me to have panic attacks and heart palps.. but that is ME.... it is a great drug for those who do not experience side-effects. It was a miracle drug when I first took it for Restless Legs. I drooled while I was on it.

I am now on .25 of Klonopin. Klonopin does not give me heart palps and actually helps me sleep. But Klonopin has been known to be addictive, or your body just gets used to it and it quits working and you have to take more and more.. I am watching myself on this drug. I still drool.. lol.. but I think it is because I am so relaxed.
