I recently got a hose buddy hose suspension system. Many of the posts I read about this item gave me concern about possible damage to the headboard by the metal hose buddy.
I purchased one length of 1/4 inch pipe insulation. this is the black foam tube style of insulation. There are two types, one is split and has an adhesive to seal the split once you put it on the pipe, the other is designed for new construction and slides over the end of the pipe. Either will work. I put it only on the lower section of the device, the upper part swivels and the padding on the lower part serves to hold the upper part away from the headboard.
Sometimes the DIY fix is more expensive than the device, this is not the case here. I think I paid 67 cents at Lowes for the pipe insulation. Just cut it to the right length with standard household scissors and you are good to go.

Good idea, Roadie! Got any pics of your setup with the foam added?
