How many of you have checked

Post by oceanpearl » Thu Jan 03, 2008 9:19 am

on the number of papers that your sleep doctor has authored.
Many years ago I discovered that the more papers a doctor has published, the more likely he is to be one of the tops in his field. When I had prostate cancer I selected a urologist who had published over 100 papers on prostate cancer and a radioligist who had published 30 times.
The sleep doctor who I am using now has published over 50 papers on sleep problems.
I just want to go back to sleep!

I did, and he was also listed as one of the "best doctors" for 2007 by NY magazine. I figured that he had to be pretty good, simply because trying to get an appointment with him is like trying to get an appointment with the pope.

No, but I just did. He has no disiplinary actions, but I did not find any articles he has published either. He is also the only game in town, listens, and seems very nice, so I will keep him. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I did a couple of years ago and again just now when I read your poll.

My sleep doctor is primarily a pulmonologist.

I'd better stop there or I'm liable to get sued. Too many people KNOW how I feel about him......but what "Tangents" said is mild compared to what my (suppressed) comments would be.

Something that we need to remember is that just because a doctor has a good bedside manner doesn't mean that he is a good doctor. The best doctor (saved me from a lifelong limp) I ever had was a real SOB and I wouldn't associate with him outside is practice for any reason. My mother's doctor was a "good doctor" and he almost killed her with medications.

Remember that a doctor works for YOU and you should extend as much effort in selecting one as you would a plumber or electrician. You need to do your homework and take an proactive part in medical treatment.
Just because one doctor says it is so doesn't mean anything Remember thatadoctor calls his business a PRACTCE and that the person who graduated last in his medical class is still called doctor.
I just want to go back to sleep!

I googled mine, got her private email addy, and sent her an email when I couldn't get in to see her and was having lots of problems.

She got me in promptly.

She was so freaked out that I'd found that email addy. I told her what website it was posted on. I don't think she's taken it down, though.

I haven't found anything she's written, but she is the medical director of the sleep center, so I figure she's okay. All she's done is write scripts for me. She really hasn't done anything else. I still have to go dig up an ENT, and a pulmunologist. At least she recommended me to one of the latter who is also a sleep specialist.

Cheers,
B.

I don't even have a clue who my "sleep doctor" is!

I live in a small town in SE NM, went to a little larger town about 30 miles away for my sleep study and it got sent to ABQ, NM for a sleep doc up there to read/interpret. After 2 weeks, the report was sent to my PCP who wrote up my prescription. So I never met, talked or contacted the actual sleep doctor.

After finding this site, I got a copy of my Rx and a copy of the sleep report about a week after I got a rental unit from a local DME. The DME couldn't/wouldn't tell me any numbers for rental cost, cost of mask, etc. I got online, ordered my APAP through our wonderful hosts and haven't looked back. I have replaced my mask 1X through our local DME about a year ago at no charge.

Since then, we've changed insurance carriers twice. Last month I contacted billmyinsurance.com to see about replacement mask and hose and, as I thought, I've got a hefty deductible to meet before insurance payments kick in.

About every 3-4 months, I visit my PCP (I think he's an insurance wh@re LOL) and he asks if I'm still using my CPAP. I say yes he says ok and we go from there. Sheesh, some follow-up, eh?

Soooooo, long story short, our hosts here and their sister auction site are gonna get all of my business. Thanks, Johnny!!
