OT: I need a Podcast Tech :-)))

Post by Babette » Wed Dec 26, 2007 3:59 pm

Hey, so I entered the 21st century and bought myself an MP3 player for Xmas. Nothing fancy, just a cheap little 2 gb thingie to listen to stuff at the gym.

Now, how the heck do I get the podcast from the website to the player? I can figure out how to LISTEN to the podcast, but I can't figure out how to save it... Oh the misery... Will This American Life elude me at the gym forever???

Please help... Maybe your 12 year old is on holiday break and bored and willing to help out an elderly cyber pal?

Many thanks,
Babette the Brain Dead

RIGHT CLICK ON THE DOWNLOAD ICON!

You'd think I'd have thought of that, but no. I'm blaming it on all the brain cells I killed at that Ted Nugent concert in Wichita in 1983...

BTW, if you aren't a fan of This American Life, you aren't living.

Right click on the purple/red arrow to save it to a file. Sigh...

THANK YOU MOMADAMS AND SON!

BTW, anyone else here laughing that *I* am attempting to install another electronic device onto my computer? I know Jerry is... I really should contemplate some beer when I do this stuff... It's so nerve wracking...

Why didn't I have children????? This is what they are good for. If only I'd realized that 20 years ago... Sheesh, too late now...

LOL,
Babs

Babs I could give you some of mine -- which 2 and 1/2 do you want? Of course they aren't teens anymore but at least you don't have to chaperone them -- oh wait THEY will want to chaperone YOU!!!!

We had the Ozark Music Festival here in Sedalia in 74-- was suppose to be a small gathering of a few thousand and in the end swelled and is still the scandal of Sedalia -- even had Wolfman Jack here. The music, the booze, the drugs flowed that week-end. Several businesses were looted but they could of wiped our town off the map. I am going to start blaming everything on it .

I'm laughing but I am also comiserating with you. I bought a palm about a year and a half ogo and it had MP3 capabilities. I had to find me a 12 year old to explain to me what a MP3 was. My daughter finally got a IPOD about 6 months ago and was impressed that dad knew how to convert her CD's to MP3's so she could load them in hers.

To get my teaching degree it was required that I take a computer course (this was in 93). Here I was a 40 something non traditional student sitting a class with a gazillion 19 year olds. First day of class -- everyone has there computer on -- but guess who!! I look around and see all these fresh faces and then look at the contraption sitting in front of me and can NOT find an on button!! I sheepishly raise my hand and in an impatient voice the instructor ask why my computer isn't on -- even more embarrassing I asked if it EVEN HAD an on button!! I can still hear the laughter now from all the babies in the class!!

I could have crawled under a rock!!

Yup, my 11 year old granddaughter "programed" my cell phone for me. Amongst other "techie" things. It has all these "capabilities". I know how to turn it on, turn it off, plug it in to charge the batteries, make a phone call, answer a ring tone and hang up. Have no idea how to access the voice mail or the other goodies.

Hey! I know how to do what I bought it for! Call for help! And if my granddaughter doesn't change the ring tone I even answer if you call me. Of course, if she changes the ring tone I don't cause I don't know its my phone ringing. I like "The Sting", she likes something else. (If she goes horseback riding alone I insist she take it w/her - just in case).

I got this nifty video camera for Christmas. It records a video on CD or still pictures on a flash drive. 11 year old granddaughter is showing me how to use it - except she's touching screen, pushing buttons so fast I'm still lost! Ah well, she has assurred me it is all set and ready to record - all I have to do is turn it on and ..... ??? I've got the turn it on down pat ....

GOD THIS WAS WAY HARDER THAN ENCORE PRO AND DIDN'T WORK IN THE END!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's it! I'm never ever ever loading electronic devices without Jerry on the other end of the phone! And Jules on the chat!

Stupid bloody thing cycled endlessly, kept reloading, wouldn't load.... Finally the stupid device wouldn't even recognize it was connected. Windows never did recognize IT....

Taking the beastly thing back to BestBuy and demanding serious intervention. I knew I should have had a beer first...

Sniffle,
Babs

sometimes it is better to just get the real thing, my friend here listens to audio books all the time while at work, she just inserts the audio book CD and drags the files over in iTunes and it moves them to her iPod at next sync,
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

As Snoredog says, that is the way my Palm works also. I even tried the link Babs posted and loaded the free Podcast into my Palm with no problems, just to see what it was like.

Babs if you want to call i'll play it for you over the phone, won't help much at the gym however.

Jerry, I can just see that - I'll use my cell phone as an MP3 player and call you for my NPR fixes.

So irritated. This is EXACTLY what usually happens to me when I try to install stuff on my computer. The little girl at Best Buy told me to come in if I had any problems, so I'm going to do that. Maybe they can fix it. I can't figure out what I'm going to do if I can't get Windows to recognize there's something plugged in....

I went to so far as to unplug the Encore card reader and plug the MP3 into that slot, and that's when the MP3 player quit responding... sigh....

I know I can't plug the card reader into my hub, but do you think it would be okay to use a USB extension cord on it? Then I could just plug in the card reader when I wanted it, or plug in the MP3 player. That is, if I can get the MP3 player to recognize it....

Don't tell me - I probably have to take the tower over to the computer store and have them install 5 new USB ports for me....

Maybe I'll call them and see what they say about that. Can't hurt to call.

Cheers,
B.

Babs, dont think that using a USB extention cord would hurt anything. The problem with hubs is that it divides voltage up between the extra ports. Only thing would be that the card reader would have it be plugged in when you boot up in order for windows to find it.

Good luck with BB, some times you can actually find someone there that knows what they are talking about. Around here this would be a bad time as all the college geeks are still home for Christmas.

I got the 2gb Sansa Clip from BestBuy. It's on their website:

bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8553816&st=sansa+clip&lp=2&type=product&cp=1&id=1188561248462

I got it on sale for $44, and yes, I got the PINK one.

Well folks, it WORKS JUST FINE HERE AT WORK, wouldn't you know? Little screen popped up, and dragged my podcast over and popped it in... sigh....

So now I'm back to staring evilly at my home PC. I've decided God really doesn't want me to have an MP3 player. You know why? I went to the computer store that built this computer, to see if they would install a high speed USB port for me AND THEY HAVE GONE OUT OF BUSINESS!!!!!

So, I looked up a high speed USB port on Amazon, it's under $25, and a very nice customer wrote a lengthy review giving detailed instructions on how to install it. But I'm afraid. So now I have a call in to my techie Mom, who has built her own computers in the past, to beg her to help me install this thing.

amazon.com/Iogear-Port-Hi-Speed-Card-GIC251U/dp/B0000BZ2WA/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_2

Or I could just do the downloads at home, drag them to my flash drive, bring them to work, and install them on my clip here at work. Which is what I think I'll do TODAY while I'm waiting for Mom to decide whether to help me or not.

LOL,
Babs

Of course mom will help, she just has to make sure you appreciate it. Thats the way moms work.

Glad you got it working.

What are you doing working, I thought schools were out until after the 1st? I thought you needed the rest.

I know what you are saying on the Out of Business thing. I went looking for the man that built my last computer and found out he is out of business also. I bought this one from BB so I guess its my fault that I did not go back to him to get my last one built. I went looking because this one is on its last leg and apparently the only way I am going to get a non Vista machine is to have one built again if I can find someone that still does it.
