1 night off cpap, how do you feel?

Post by zorrro13 » Sat Dec 22, 2007 8:53 am

The other night I woke up with my mask on the floor arrrghh so I hit the buttons on my machine in a panic to see how long I slept without it and bad news, 6 hours! I knew straight away the rest of the day I would feel extremely crappy but its kind of difficult to explain the feeling but i will try.
first there is that tension headache starting from the base of the skull to the temples, my shoulder and neck muscles are cramped up and my eyes feel like lead marbles. my tongue feels hairy and sometimes if its really bad I feel like vomiting although usually just dry reaching. I have also started to get cramps in my hands but not sure if its related. Some people here say that they feel better off cpap than on and I cant even imagine how I could go more than a day without
My pressure is 10
What are your symptoms?

I usually wake up with a headache and an incredibly dry mouth. Later in the day I will struggle to keep from nodding off at work. Hard to believe I dealt with it daily for probably years...

Now if I wake up in the morning with air blowing up my nose, I know it will be a good day!

I don't even know. I went so many years w/lousy sleep that I was determined to make CPAP work. I've only missed 4-5 nights since starting CPAP and that was due to an absolutely raw nose interior due to no humidifier and then no HEATED humidifier. I "couldn't" use the CPAP. AND I felt so rotten due to the raw snozz that who noticed anything else?

I guess I'm a weird person. I've always been weird. Even when I'm sleep-deprived, I can't sleep much. But it expresses itself in other ways.......like aches and pains, depression and anger and over-eating.
Anyhow.....when I go without the CPAP for one night, not much changes. If I go 2-3 days, I start feeling totally unmotivated and start getting real tired in the afternoons (although I still don't nap more than 10 minutes).
I've noticed my food cravings start up quickly when I don't use CPAP.
All those years of not being able to stop eating (until I started CPAP) make me wonder if it was because of not having sleep.

Did that in my early days with CPAP--would take off my mask, no recollection of doing it. Just a reflex I guess as my unconscious mind was adjusting/accepting this "thing" on my face. AND, my sleep doc said that was okay, as long as I used my machine for about 5 hours each night, I'd be okay. Wow! Not knowing any better, I've even got into the habit of just leaving my mask off following a middle of the night bathroom visit, thinking, "well, I done my 5 hours." Amazing!! Of course, I now know better. So much for medical advice (at least in that case!). Now, I never remove my mask, and I'm feelin' great!

One word: awful!

I tried it once (because I thought CPAP wasn't working too good) since starting my therapy and I woke up like a zombie. I had a brain fog, was moving slowly because it seems like I didn't sleep (well I probably didn't because of apnea ). I was talking to my g/f and she could tell I didn't use my mask because everything seem in slow motion. Even my worst night on CPAP with major mask leaks can't compare to a night without CPAP! So it's not tough, for me, to be 100% compliant with the treatment.

But then again, I have severe sleep apnea with a pressure of 17.
